Wang Yihan, who began to practice badminton when he was about 9 years old, is a member of Shanghai Juvenile Sports School, and his coach is Cheng Yan. Later, she was recommended by Cheng Yan to the Shanghai Badminton Team in 2003 and participated in the World Youth Badminton Championships for China. In 2005, he was selected into the second team of the national team, and won a runner up in the Asian Youth Badminton Championships and a runner up in the National Badminton Championships. In 2006, Wang Yihan was selected into the first team of the national team.
In 2006, Wang Yihan defeated world and Asian champion Xie Xingfang in the China Open Badminton Championship. In the World Cup invitational tournament held in Yiyang, Hunan Province in the next two weeks, Wang Yihan eliminated Zhang Ning in the last four. After reaching the final, he defeated Xie Xingfang again in 2-0 games, becoming the champion of the World Cup invitational tournament for the first time. In the World Youth Championships in mid October, Wang Yihan defeated his Indian counterpart 21-13 and 21-9 in Incheon, South Korea, and won the championship again.
In March 2009, Wang Yihan took part in the All England Badminton Championships for the second time. Her outstanding skills were impressive. She successively defeated her senior sister Xie Xingfang and Hong Kong's Zhou Mi to enter the final. Finally, she defeated Denmark's Tine Rasmussen 2-1 in the final, winning her first women's singles title in the All England Badminton Championships.
In May 2009, Wang Yihan was selected into the 24 person list of Sudirman Cup, and eventually replaced Xie Xingfang, who was in poor condition, as the first singles player. In addition to the first group match, Wang Yihan was included in the list of competitors, and she won the matches against Japan and Indonesia, making great contributions. However, since the women's singles team ranked fourth in the semi-finals and finals, and the Chinese team won the first three events in two days, according to the competition rules, only three of the semi-finals and finals need to win, Wang Yihan failed to appear in these two events. However, its performance has been highly praised.
Wang Yihan has outstanding skills and many scoring methods. She is very aggressive both in front of the net and in the backcourt. Her technical skills also guarantee this aggressive play. Wang Yihan can often set off a climax of scoring several points in the competition, which is because her racket and racket are connected quickly, and her playing momentum is like a rainbow, giving her opponent the feeling of "black clouds pressing the city to destroy".
Not only does Wang Yihan have comprehensive skills, but also his abundant physical strength is rare. Even Rasmussen, the representative of the European power school playing style, said that it was hard to play with Wang Yihan, and Rasmussen, the masculine style, could not consume Wang Yihan's physical strength.
What Wang Yihan is most commendable is his excellent psychological quality. In adversity, Wang Yihan does not mess up in any way. This character of being more and more brave is the precious wealth that Li Yongbo has emphasized many times.
Wang Yihan's nickname in the team is "kitten", because her teammates say she has a big face, so "big face cat", "cat", "kitten" and other nicknames are all given to her by her teammates, of which "kitten" is the most. Now Wang Yihan has been used to this name, and he enjoys it very much.
Like all girls of the same age, although Wang Yihan is busy with training and has little time for herself, she has a keen sense of pop culture at this age, which also makes her inevitably have her own idols. Jay Chou, the R&B Little Sky King, RAIN, the Korean idol, and Zheng Jiaying, a TVB student, are all her "dishes". Among them, Jay Chou is the most.

On August 14, 2011, the women's singles final of the London World Badminton Championships ended. Wang Yihan defeated Zheng Shaojie of Chinese Taipei to win the championship.
