Born in 1985, Kaniskina is a promising young player. After winning the gold medal of women's 20 km walking race at the 2007 Osaka World Championships, she has also become a hot favourite to win the title at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Kaniskina won the silver medal in the 20 km walking race in the 2006 European Championships, and won the gold medal in the World Championships a year later. In 2008, Kaniskina broke the world record of women's 20 km walking race, which was set by her teammate Ivanova in 2005. However, because three official referees were not present to prove the record, Kaniskina's achievements were not recognized by IAAF.

In 2009, Karniskina won the championship of 20 km walking race again at the Berlin Track and Field World Championships, becoming the first female athlete to defend the championship of the event in the history of the World Championships.
