Lishu County, located in the "golden corn belt" of Songliao Plain, is a major grain producing county in China. Han Chunming is driving an agricultural machine in the field.

"After a while, my UAV will come into use."

Han Chunming, 35 years old, has been running agricultural machinery in the cooperative. He is a genuine "old farmer" and "old driver". Now he has learned new skills.

In 2023, Han Chunming began to learn UAV driving technology, and obtained the qualification certificate, becoming a plant protection UAV pilot.

"It was amazing to see someone holding up the remote control, clicking on the screen, and dialing the joystick before, and the drone beside it soars into the air."

The Fenghuangshan Agricultural Machinery Cooperative working in Han Chunming has 24 sets of multi-functional monitoring stations, 2 UAVs, and 15 sets of automatic agricultural machinery driving equipment, realizing mechanical seeding and UAV spraying pesticide. You can see the grain planting and growth by logging in to the APP with your mobile phone.

"With the drone, my waist is not sore and my legs are not painful. It takes no effort to take 15 mu of medicine an hour."

New technology and new farm tools have made Han Chunming feel the benefits of modern agriculture.

"In the past, farmers were mainly responsible for taking anti insect drugs with sprayers on their backs. One day, we were too tired to stand up and hit too many acres of land. Now we can quickly prevent and control pests and diseases." Han Chunming told reporters that in the past, one person could take medicine on an average of one acre of land per hour by relying on manpower. After using the plant protection UAV, whether spraying pesticides or fertilizing, it not only saves labor costs, but also has high efficiency. "The key is more accurate than labor."

In 2019, UAV drivers were included in the national occupational classification ceremony, becoming a new occupation. More new farmers are flying out of this black land.

Is it difficult to change from "old farmers" to "new farmers"?

It's really hard! However, it is not difficult.

Han Chunming said frankly: "I don't read books to study at ordinary times, but suddenly I have to learn all kinds of theoretical knowledge and rules and regulations of UAVs. I can only do 'stupid work': learn when I have time, practice when I have time, and explore and study a little."

With the new technology, Han Chunming's income has increased.

Before I drove agricultural machinery in cooperatives, I was usually busy in planting and harvesting seasons. Now, crops in the fields need to be fertilized and sprayed by plant protection drones after they grow. Han Chunming has been busy in the past two months when he was relatively idle.

"Sometimes I can also receive rewards from my boss."

Han Chunming's next goal is to become a "new farmer" with "wisdom" in farming. "Now I'm still a novice, and I need to learn more from 'old drivers' to master more technical skills," Han Chunming said.

At present, the fertile black land in Northeast China has entered the stage of spring cultivation. From automatic agricultural machinery sowing to UAV spraying biological pesticides, new technology, new farm tools and new farmers are making this black land bid farewell to "facing the black soil" and "eating from the sky".
