Gangzhongping Village, Xiejiapu Town, Dingcheng District, Changde City, Hunan Province, where Dai Hong lives, together with 11000 mu of paddy fields in surrounding villages, has built a comprehensive demonstration area of 10000 mu of grain production in recent years. In March 2024, General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed during his inspection here that "we should strengthen the promotion of good varieties, opportunities and laws, work hard on intensive cultivation, further improve the grain yield and quality, and make grain growing rich".

"Seed is the key to increase production and improve quality." Dai Hong took out samples of early rice and introduced the "Xiangzaoxian 24" selected this year to the reporter. "Round grain rice, with high yield, is suitable for rice flour processing, and rice sells well."

There is a knack for selecting good seeds. The agricultural and rural departments of Dingcheng District regularly organize evaluation and display, and all kinds of seeds will be "tested". The "winners" will be tested on a small scale first, and then promoted after they are identified. "Last year, new varieties of early rice earned more than 200 yuan per mu," said Dai Hong.

"After planting for most of my life, the driverless rice transplanter is still the first time to use!" Standing in front of his own field, Wang Lizhi, a grain farmer in Gangzhongping Village, talked about the new things about rice transplants this year.

The rice transplanter is equipped with an intelligent module to plan the route independently. It slows down when encountering corners, turns when encountering ridges, and the level of rice transplants is not inferior to the "old style". When talking about new things about farming, Wang Lizhi didn't even think: "Now you can farm with leather shoes, and buy services from transplanting to drying."

From "organic and usable" to "organic and usable", the mechanization rate of rice cultivation and harvest in Changde City increased to 83.8% last year, and the proportion of new agricultural machinery and equipment exceeded 40%.

After the transplanting of early rice seedlings, the continuous greenhouses are particularly open. There are many benefits of industrialized seedling raising: soil spraying, sowing, water spraying automation, water and fertilizer irrigation integration, and fewer pests and diseases than traditional methods. Su Shaojun broke his fingers and said, "We should strengthen the promotion of centralized seedling raising, adjust plant spacing reasonably and plant closely, reduce losses in low stubble harvesting... intensive cultivation still has much room for improvement."

On the vast fields, the youth is active. I met Chen Shuaiyu on the ridge of the field, a post-90s college student who returned home in a hurry. "We will talk about the intended cooperation with several agricultural machinery enterprises. This year, we will build a new storage point and quick repair station for agricultural machinery parts in the demonstration area to make the maintenance of agricultural machinery more convenient."

The Yize Rice Professional Cooperative led by Chen Shuaiyu has more than 300 members, and the social service area will exceed 50000 mu in 2023. "This year, the area of socialized services has increased by more than 4000 mu, and the cooperative has three more young members." Chen Shuaiyu said, "We 'new farmers' should be better' farmers'!"
