At the forum, Chen Xiangsong made in-depth discussions on the topic of "giving play to the role of the main force of basic research in colleges and universities to achieve self-reliance in high-level science and technology".

Universities are the main force of basic research in China. Chen Xiangsong said that doing basic research is not only a matter for key universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University, but also for schools like Hainan Normal University.

"I think the standard of building a strong country in science and technology is to cultivate scientists like world-class scientific masters." Chen Xiangsong said that throughout the history of world science and technology development, a group of well-known great scientists such as Archimedes, Newton, Einstein, Mendeleev, Darwin and others have emerged, who have made great contributions to the development of human society. "I think we should keep up with them and catch up with them in order to truly become a technological power," he said.

So, when can we realize these aspirations? Chen Xiangsong said that the report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China has mapped out a new journey and a new blueprint for us, that is, to basically realize socialist modernization by 2035, and to build China into a prosperous, strong, democratic, civilized, harmonious and beautiful socialist modernization power by the middle of this century.

Chen Xiangsong said, "Therefore, I think that by 2035, we should initially reach the level of a scientific giant, and by 2050, we should reach this level in any case." He said that this is both an expectation and a goal that must be achieved.
