Fifth to sixth centuries Hebei Dingzhou marble white marble carving
Collection of Philadelphia Museum of Art Longri Compilation
Hebei is an important development area for the early gold and copper Buddha statues in China. The gold and copper statues laid the foundation for the development and formation of Dingzhou white stone statues. The white stone Buddha statue in Dingzhou began in the late Northern Wei Dynasty and prevailed in the early Tang Dynasty. It gradually declined after the middle and late Tang Dynasty. The statue of Dingzhou takes the white marble produced in Quyang as the carving material. Because Quyang is adjacent to Dingzhou and has long been the jurisdiction of Dingzhou in history, it is called the white stone Buddhist statue of Dingzhou.
These three small busts of Bodhisattva, with similar faces, exquisite carving, smooth material, and fine texture, are excellent white jade statues. Dingzhou white stone Buddhist statues are wonderful flowers in the history of Chinese art, with strong local characteristics, and have an important impact on Shandong and other surrounding areas.
