Review of academic regrets in 2012

——Year end Speech (I)

Zhao Wei (Zhejiang University)

At the end of the year, I couldn't help but take stock of what I had heard, seen and experienced in the year that was going to die, so as to sort out something from it, so as to judge the internal and external trends and catch the trend of the world. As a scholar and university professor, in addition to domestic and international events, I also want to pay attention to people and things in the academic world. Too many things happened in this year. In the "post crisis" era, the world was full of things. The economy was in good times and bad times. The academic community and scholars were also unwilling to be lonely. Naturally, they should make some noise! Good news "mainstream media" have said a lot, but I don't want to mention it for the time being. I want to deal with the regrets that make scholars feel a little bit lost. The conventional practice of mainstream media is to list "ten major events". I always prefer the number of three, which is regarded as an auspicious number. Therefore, three items are listed first.

With my profession and knowledge as the "starting point", I look at the academic community and scholars from the near to the far. Among the regrets that will happen in the past 2012, the following three should be listed as "top three":

The first thing happened in the economic circle. The most sensational thing was the "revelation" of a famous economist who was expelled from Peking University. Without naming names, readers will guess who it is and what it is! They are the famous "First Person in China's Economics" and "First Person in New China's Harvard Doctorate". It was this public who revealed the scandal about the president and professor of Peking University and the "Dream of Taoyuan"! The matter ended with the prosecution of the Duke by Peking University. Why is it over? A discerning person knows at a glance that the prosecution belongs to the prosecution and is unlikely to hold a court session. In fact, it means that this matter will be stopped! Looking back, both parties have made mistakes. Peking University's blunder came first. The biggest blunder was the arrogance of school leaders, ignoring the anger of scholars. A world-renowned economist was opened by the president of the hospital. After years of ignoring the complaint, he was finally forced to resort to such a bad move. Take advantage of Weibo to climb high and drink: What's wrong with the Dean and Professor of Peking University! Forced Peking University to accept! The result is twice as many injuries. In Peking University, the reputation of a century old famous school is greatly reduced, and in the "first person in economics", the reputation is also damaged. What's amazing is that Peking University is full of talents and has long offered advice to government agencies. In the face of this public disclosure, it is obviously out of order and every move is smelly! But that guy's economic model is so good, his reasoning is so rigorous, and his countermeasures and suggestions are so attractive, but it seems that there is no way to start? Can't we be more tactical? Use a game theory strategy or something? I believe that because of this, outsiders not only look down on Peking University, but also look down on famous economists.

The second one also occurred in the circle This "circle" is the university. The most sensational thing is that the headmaster has a meeting to play cards. As for this matter, I was shocked when I heard it in foreign countries at the beginning. Then I thought about it according to the logic of "existence is reasonable", straightened out the clue, and wrote a short comment titled "It's nothing for principals to play cards"! The reason why there is nothing in the list is that today, the presidents of mainland universities are only first level officials, and people from top to bottom will stare at everything they say and do when they go out. They dare not make mistakes. In the headmasters' forums on both sides of the Taiwan Straits and in four places, they did not dare to speak freely. Most of what they said to others was excited and they knew it was hard to act, so they were bored. They played cards to kill time. According to the English world, it was "killing time" time)。 Of course, there is some suspicion of justifying the headmaster. But excuse is excuse. Think carefully. After all, this is an embarrassing thing. So I added a sentence at the end of the short comment: "For the party concerned, this is a real embarrassment after all! At least in the future," confidence "will be greatly affected in the face of teachers and students' persuasion." In fact, in the school where I work today, whenever there is an administrative shuffle, the "pure" professors with personality will often say, "Go to play cards again!"

The third thing happened between the inner circle and the outer circle Not economics, but university. This is Learning from the descendants of the ancestors Ji Xianlin's son published a book earlier, which overturned the image of the "master of Chinese culture" and the "person who moved China" who were worshipped by Chinese people. It is described in the book as a "lonely, lonely, mean and ruthless scholar" (Wikipedia language). Then Bingxin's grandson scribbled on the tombstone of his grandmother, and wrote eight big characters, "It's no harm to teach a son, how can you be a teacher". I call this "subversion idol tide". Primary and middle school students have no idols! To be honest, I don't agree with this trend. If a man is not a sage, who can be faultless? Therefore, there is a mainstream preference for civilized behavior all over the world: "to avoid the sages". It is intended to magnify the wise side of the wise and inspire future generations to learn well! If the opposite is true, and their defects are magnified, the result is that society has no moral and learning idols, what will teenagers learn? Of course, this may be my kind of alarmism?!
