Original title: 30000 ink wash animations reveal the history of the Winter Olympics

In the display of the core link "Five Rings of Ice and Snow", a group of ink and wash animations full of "Chinese style" revealed the development process of the Winter Olympic Movement. Gao Yanmei, the head of the ink painting animation team and professor of the Beijing Institute of Graphic Arts High Precision Innovation Center, said that this group of ink painting animation was finalized after six revisions based on nearly 2000 paper effects and nearly 30000 digital animations.

On November 12, 2021, 84 days before the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, Professor Gao Yanmei's innovative design team of digital ink animation received an important task: to design and draw ink animation for the rise of the "ice and snow rings" at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games.

How to endow the characters with traditional texture and life spirit in the form of ink and wash on the basis of the original scientific and technological design of sports figures? The ink and wash animation team tried to achieve the effect by hand painting with rice paper and digital ink and wash brushes.

Through hand-painted drawings on nearly 2000 pieces of paper, the team used the method of "image taking meaning" in Chinese traditional culture to achieve the extraction of the inner "look" and "subtle meaning" of the moving figure, grasp the trace of the movement of the figure, and turn calligraphy strokes into a form of expression of life. In order to improve the production efficiency, the team applied the experience and effect reference of brush hand painting to the digital ink brush painting. By strengthening the use of calligraphy strokes, linking strokes, dry strokes, pause strokes, etc., the team strengthened the tactile momentum transformation from paper to digital, and presented the Chinese style ink animation effect in the full sense of digital technology.

In order to achieve the effect of "striking a blockbuster" at the beginning of the animation display, the team tried to draw the first stroke and important part of the first figure of the animation display by hand through brush and rice paper drawing, and recorded them completely by digital photography. In the subsequent technical optimization, the moving figure was rendered into an animation effect, highlighting the digital calligraphy texture from "momentum" to "rhyme", realizing the high-quality, artistic and Chinese presentation of the digital ink style.
