Creation background

The film was initially positioned as a "futuristic thriller", but Wong Kar wai just met the shooting of In Mood for Love at the beginning of creation, so 2046 was temporarily put on hold. After the shooting of "In Mood for Love", Wong Kar wai began to conceive "2046" again. He felt that the original idea - to imagine Hong Kong in 50 years' time - was too straightforward and simple. He wanted to make a breakthrough, so he thought that "2046" might be a continuation of "In Mood for Love", a symbol of the past and a symbol of the future [1]
When talking about the "2046" in the film "2046", Wong Kar wai said that the inspiration for "2046" was originally derived from the "fifty year unchanged" agreement between China and Britain when Hong Kong returned to China in 1997. He believes that "2046" has become the symbol of a time bottom line, the end of a commitment [21]

Team building

The behind the scenes team of 2046 brings together well-known industry creators from all over the world [9] This 2046, a sister film of In Mood for Love, is also participated by photographer Du Kefeng, who is one of Wong Kar wai's Golden Triangle films. Together, they shot many classic films such as In Mood for Love, The True Story of Ah Fei, Chongqing Forest, etc [40]
Editor and art director, clothing design Zhang Shuping is the best art director in Hong Kong, and also a friend of Wong Kar wai for many years. Classical films shot by Zhang Shuping and Wong Kar wai are endless, and many of Wong Kar wai's films are almost directed by Zhang Shuping in art and clothing, such as Chongqing Forest, Spring Festival, Fallen Angel, and In Mood for Love, etc [41]

Role selection

Wong Kar wai felt that 2046 might be a continuation of In Mood for Love, so in order to continue in Mood for Love, he chose to work with Tony Leung again. [1]
Wong Kar wai once said in an interview that he had seen Dong Jie's performance in The Metro and found that most of her characters were introverted and sad, so he suddenly thought that Wang Jingwen had a sister in 2046, who was very outgoing, bold, and frank about love, and thought she could try. In 2001, 2046 identified the first group of actors: Tony Leung, Faye Wong, Maggie Cheung, Zhang Zhen and Takuya Kimura. However, the choice of the heroine has been in the air. Originally, every performance of the actress was filmed for five years, but the final editing showed that Zhang Ziyi has many scenes. As for the heroine in Wang's heart, it is still a mystery. [2] [16]

Clothing and makeup props

The film 2046 has certain science fiction elements, so there are many futuristic shapes in the film. Zhang Shuping himself was satisfied with the futuristic costumes in this film, and used the word "appropriate" to evaluate the futuristic modeling in this film. When Zhang Shuping designed future scenes for 2046, he considered texture rather than color.
In the film 2046, Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi are more prominent among female characters. The design of cheongsam highlights their sexiness and beauty. Wearing a vintage cheongsam and black gloves, they highlight their temperament and show the pride of the black spider. Zhang Ziyi's appearance has changed from the simplicity and preciseness of previous films, adding a bit of smoke and anger.
When Zhang Shuping designed the model for Takuya Kimura, who plays Tak in the film, he considered how to adapt to the overall tone of the film purely from the perspective of the film, and did not worry because the other party was a traffic star or a handsome singer. [20]

Special Effects

2046 is Wong Kar wai's first work to use special effects [51] Although there are not many special effects, it is not easy to make excellent special effects in 2004, when the technology is not yet developed. In addition, Wong Kar wai's efforts to make perfect special effects in movies will inevitably lead to difficulties in making special effects. Even the famous BUF company that once produced special effects for The Matrix was invited to complete the post work [53] , the film has continued to take 5 years [16]
Most of the special effects in the film are computer special effects. To achieve the effects in today's film, special effects companies in France, Hong Kong and the mainland of China must be mobilized at the same time to connect the pictures that were not in the same scene. In order to coordinate with the background of the film, many pictures must be remade again and again. [16]

Soundtrack

Wong Kar wai likes to use sad string music to describe the story of love trapped by individuals and difficult to calm down. The sad atmosphere of the string music "Yumeji's Theme" written by Mei Linmao just attracted Wong Kar wai [52]
Mei Linmao's music in 2046 is different from usual. In the past, Mei Linmao's feeling of sadness and sadness is always carried out, but the theme song of 2046 gives people a firmness to rush to the battlefield. [23] In addition to Mei Linmao's interpretation of music, the film also quoted many classic and famous songs. Each song appeared at the right moment. The solemn and soothing "Polonaise" brought the audience into the scene and made them feel the same. [42-43]

Viewfinder selection

Born in Shanghai, Wong Kar wai has always been full of feelings for Shanghai in the 1960s. Many of his films are set in Shanghai, and 2046 is no exception. Wong Kar wai's attitude towards choosing the location is consistent with his serious attitude towards movies. Therefore, apart from Shanghai in the mainland, Wong Kar wai also shot scenes in France and Hong Kong. In order to integrate the scenery of the three places in the later stage, so as not to look too abrupt, he took many repeated pictures. It took one year for the picture convergence of China, France and Hong Kong [16]

Behind the Scenes

  • When the host interviewed the actor Dong Jie, she said that she didn't have many scenes in the film. Dong Jie didn't show too depressed about this. She said that it was more important to play her own role as an actor [15]
  • Actor Takuya Kimura said that when he arrived at the studio every morning, director Wong Kar wai would temporarily tell him what play to play that day and start shooting immediately. He was very confused about this and could not understand the director's meaning [22]

Thematic Implication

2046 is a famous film, full of metaphors and symbols. The number 2046 makes people think of the year first, which represents time. Time extends again, and it is memory, which is firmly bound to time. Room 2046 in the film carries Zhou Muyun's memories, with Su Lizhen in the front and Bai Ling in the rear. His memory and experience seem to be bound to 2046. Zhou Muyun wrote the novel 2046, setting the time in the future. It seems to be a love story of robots, but it actually carries Zhou Muyun's own ideas and memories of the past. Through this novel, Zhou Muyun hopes to find the lost past. There is a passage in the film that well explains the theme of the film and the deep philosophical core - "Many people go to 2046 for only one reason, hoping to find the lost past, because it is said that everything will not change there [18] 。”

Narrative technique

The narrative technique of 2046 doomed its complexity. Wong Kar wai cut the time and space in the film into pieces and disordered them. There was no time line, and he completely abandoned linear narration. Many of the episodes were very jumpy. But in fact, everything was revealed at the beginning. The train to 2046 at the beginning directly introduced the picture into the plot of the novel 2046, and then turned to reality, Achieve seamless connection. Although the film jumps as a whole and the scene changes frequently, the essence of the film is Zhou Muyun's encounter with others, from Black Spider, Lulu, Wang Jingwen to Wang Jiewen, Bai Ling, and so on, to finally melancholy, awakening, and writing 2046. There is still a clear thread hidden under the seemingly strange narrative [17]

Lens language

The overall color of 2046 is dim. When describing the story of Su Lizhen, the color is grayish black. When describing the story of Zhou Muyun, Bai Ling and Wang Jingwen, the color is dark blue. When we get to the 2046 train, the tone turns dark red again. These tones establish the melancholy, melancholy and depressing tone of the film. In addition to the metaphorical tone, the scenes shot in this film are mostly platforms at dusk, dark sky and lone characters. The overall picture has a sense of beauty like silhouette. In addition, the unique use of the lens, in which the characters and scenes account for half of the picture, contains the lonely and lonely inner expression of the characters [47]

Professional evaluation

Positive comments
In the film 2046, Wong Kar wai breaks the time and space of the story into pieces, breaking the traditional way of expression of temporal and spatial order, and the characters become more real and fresh with the flow of time. In the end, what he completes is a process of sticking to himself, showing the inevitability and irreversibility of the passage of time in such a personal space, This interpretation of the passage of time inadvertently left the audience with melancholy feelings [17] (Comments by Gong Chunjie on Film Literature)
Wong Kar wai is an important figure in Hong Kong's post-modern film industry. The pure embodiment of Wong Kar wai's creation is that he only expresses his own thoughts. Because of this, he can face the situation of individual life more truly and directly, and restore the true existence state of human beings. The film 2046 shows a strong feminist color by discussing the inherent "memory" theme of human beings, and pays attention to love and human living conditions [18] (Film review by Li Hui)
Wong Kar wai's films have a strong personal color, and the audience can quickly distinguish his works. Works like 2046 are unknowingly fierce at first sight, but when you look again, you will find that they are as beautiful and delicate as prose, and as vague and implicit as misty poetry [19] (Art evaluation by Su Yating)
Negative comments
It is a defect to rely too much on another film as the narrative background in 2046. When 2046 was released, the box office was not satisfactory. Film critics criticized "chaos, fragmentation, self replication", and the most popular comment of the audience was that they could not understand. 2046 does not break out of the nostalgic circle. Compared with other Wong Kar wai films, it is not the best. It is just a film of Wong Kar wai's pure self expression. In 2046, there are many echoes of his early films, such as "birds without feet", subtitles, 3D animation, voice over, etc. These elements are too simple, without new classic paragraphs and creativity, which makes the whole film look like a comforting memory of Wong Kar wai [2] (Xinmin Weekly Review)
