Huangshi Lake

Known as "incomparable mountain lake", it is the largest lake in Yellowstone Park. It may be found in John Colter's famous winter expedition between 1807 and 1808. Many arrows, spearheads and artificial tools found by the lakeside proved that Indians would camp here in summer earlier. The map of 1806-1811 marked Huangshi Lake as Eustis Lake; Riddle Lake on the map in 1814 may be Huangshi Lake or nearby Jackson Lake. In 1826, some hunters called it Sublette Lake. For example, hunter Potts mentioned in his letter to his family that "she is a huge freshwater lake on the top of the mountain, about 140 miles in diameter, crystal clear". Ferris named the lake Huangshi Lake in 1831 and marked it on the map in 1836. In the 1860s, Huangshi Lake became famous among hunters, soldiers and western explorers. In 1871, Hayden became the first person on record to sail on the lake (Anna), but the hunter or Indian boat was probably earlier. There were also Topping in 1874, the government survey ship in 1874, the Explorer in 1880, and the National Geological Bureau ship destroyed by lightning in 1885.
Huangshi Lake is a natural lake with an area of 132 square miles and an altitude of 7733 feet. It is the largest high-altitude lake above 7000 feet in North America and one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world. It is 20 miles long, 14 miles wide, 141 miles in circumference, 140 feet in average depth, and 5 degrees Celsius in average annual water temperature. The whole Huangshi Lake holds 340000 tons of water, with an annual outflow of 30000 tons. The water is completely replaced every 8-10 years. The observation since 1952 shows that the annual fluctuation of the water surface height of Huangshi Lake does not exceed 6 feet. At the end of December to the beginning of January to the end of May and the beginning of June, Huangshi Lake is frozen for half a year, and the ice layer is several inches to two feet thick. Determined by the size and depth of the lake and the local monsoon, Huangshi Lake is sometimes like a turbulent inland sea. The Huangshi Lake in late summer is stratified due to different water temperatures. The surface water temperature of the lake rarely exceeds 19 degrees, while the lower water temperature is much lower, so it is not suitable for swimming. Humans can only survive for 20-30 minutes at this temperature. [1]

Mud volcano

Announce
edit
During the Washburn expedition in 1870, a team member once described the mud volcano as "the greatest miracle we have seen so far". Today's mud volcano is very different from the past. Its roar can no longer be heard a mile away, and mud is no longer spewing out of the mud pit, but it is still very strange. The footpath from the parking lot to Mud Volcano via Dragon's Mouth can be used by wheelchairs, while the other half mile path through South Lake and Black Dragon's Caldragon is steep. The famous scenic spots in Nihuo Mountain are Longkou and Black Dragon Pool. Longkou Hot Spring gets its name from its rhythmic steam and tongue shaped water flow, which sounds like burping, but its activity has obviously weakened since December 1994. In 1948, Black Dragon Pond led to mudslides, uprooting trees and covering forests with muddy water. The huge disturbance of the muddy water on the side of the Black Dragon Pool tells us that the tail of the Black Dragon will bite off its head at any time.
In January 1995, a new geothermal spot on the south bank of the Mud Geyser became extremely active. This area was 20 feet long and 8 feet wide, including several air vents, small ponds and frying pan shaped things. The mountain slopes on the south and southwest sides of the hot mud geyser are emitting steam or muddy water. The new geothermal active spots have aroused great interest of tourists, and many illegal intrusions have also occurred. The most wonderful landscape in Nihuo Mountain is not open to the public. Gumper, the huge boiling hot mud spring behind the Sour Lake, has no access to the plank road, while the hottest and most active geothermal activity in the region has recently appeared in the south of Gumper. The administrator guidance service provided by the park provides opportunities for tourists to visit this site. In the field behind the mud volcano, researchers are investigating Thermophilic microorganism This research can provide help for the research of the origin of life theory and medical equipment environment equipment. Sulfur pool

The sulfur pool can be seen on the highland to the north of the mud volcano. Sulfur Pond is one of the most acidic hot springs in Yellowstone Park, with a PH value of 1.3. Its fast splashing yellow water reminds us of the diviners in Shakespeare's works. On this highland, tourists can also see the "turbulent pool" that is no longer turbulent now and the mud pit of a huge active hot mud spring.
More information about mud volcano and sulfur pool can be obtained from the administrator at the Diaoyu Bridge Tourist Center.
