In the Song Dynasty, the village of Machong Town was originally under the jurisdiction of Bao'an County, Guangzhou Prefecture.
In the early Ming Dynasty, it was under the jurisdiction of Zhongtang District, Dongguan County.
On the eve of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Machong was managed by the New Fourth District of Dongguan.

Origin of place names
Machong Town gets its name because of the dense river network around the town, and the cultivated land on the bank mainly produces hemp.[2]
Guangdong Machong Huayang Lake National Wetland ParkIt covers an area of 352.09 hectares and consists of Huayang Lake, Machong River, Second Chong, Third Jiao and Majiao River. Its four boundaries are: starting from Machong River in the east, ending at the intersection of Second Chong and Machong River in the south, Majiao River in the west and West Ring Bridge in the north.It covers two wetland types: permanent river, flood plain and reservoir pond.[14]
