Matthias Grunevald's works are characterized by strong dramatic and emotional expression. His crucifixion is one of the most influential works in Christian art. The outer side of the Eisenheim Altar is his masterpiece. Grunevald describes the pain and suffering suffered by Christ when he was crucified with extremely frightening, even repulsive realism.
