Matt was born in Baoding, Hebei in 1994 and moved to Inner Mongolia in 2009.
Matt's sports cells were inherited from his father, who was a track and field player in the school when he was young. And he went on the way of table tennis purely because he felt funny. "I started playing basketball when I was 6 years old. When the coach of the city sports school came to our school to select people, our head teacher and my father were middle school students, and he recommended me at that time. I was very tall at that time, very similar to my father." Unexpectedly, the coach chose him at once. At the beginning, the parents did not oppose Matt's playing. They thought it would be good to exercise. With the improvement of his football skills, Matt is faced with the choice of whether to continue playing, and continuing to play will be a semi professional or even professional road. "At that time, I was young and had no idea of the future. I didn't know what it would be like to choose table tennis. I just thought it was fun to play and I liked it. My parents were hesitant. They wanted me to study hard and didn't want me to follow a professional path. When they asked me, I said I really liked playing table tennis, and they respected my choice."
At the age of 12, Matt was selected to join the Hebei Provincial Team, leaving his hometown Baoding for Shijiazhuang. In his mother's eyes, he is still a child, too young. Because she was not sure that he was alone in other places, her mother deliberately quit her job to accompany him to Shijiazhuang. From teaching him how to adapt to the collective life to how to take care of his own food, clothing, housing and transportation, such a day has passed for nearly a year. Mom was relieved to see Matt gradually adapt to the new environment. In 2009, Matt was selected into the national second team and then moved to Inner Mongolia.

When I was about to go back, I called my coach and asked him how to meet the team. The coach replied to me that I might not be able to call and asked me to wait for news in Beijing.
