Malacca Jichang Street Cultural Square is an ancient street located in Malacca, Malacca, Malaysia, which integrates historic sites, culture and leisure.
The original meaning of Jichang Street is taken from the Minnan word "Jiechang Street", which means to describe it as a busy street. However, the Minnan word "Jiechang" is homonymous with "Jichang", so it gradually evolved to be called Jichang Street. In addition, because Malacca was once colonized by the Netherlands, the chicken farm street was also called Jonker Walk, mainly referring to the Dutch aristocratic street.
Jichang Street is now built into a famous and prosperous cultural tourist attraction. The reason is that more than 600 years ago, when Zheng He, a famous diplomatic envoy of the Ming Dynasty, made seven ocean voyages and six visits to Malacca, an "official factory" was set up here, which also made more than 20 surrounding streets and alleys with Jichang Street as the backbone the first concentrated settlement area for Chinese to move to Nanyang at that time. However, Jichang Street began to decline in the 1990s. Many local residents moved to the new area, leaving the old street empty and losing its original prosperity. At that time, the Malacca government was aware of the crisis, and in 2000 proposed the establishment of the Jichang Street Cultural House. At the same time, it appointed a working committee headed by the senior executive of Malacca, Datuk Weila Yan Wenlong, a gentleman of the Taiping Bureau, to lead the development and construction of Jichang Street.
