In 1974, he began his diplomatic career at the Swiss Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1975 to 1984, he was stationed in Madrid, Brussels and London to hold various diplomatic posts. From 1984 to 1992, he returned to Switzerland and served as the director of the General Office in Bern, which was jointly established by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and was responsible for developing relations between Switzerland and the European Union and the European Free Trade Association. He has been a minister since 1984 and an ambassador since 1988. From 1992 to 1999, he served as the State Secretary and the Director of the Department of Government Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At the same time, he was the coordinator and main negotiator of bilateral agreements between Switzerland and the EU (1994 to 1998).
On August 27, 1998, he became international committee of the red cross chairman. In 1999, Somaluga left office, and Krenberger took office in early 2000. Unlike his predecessor, he kept a low profile and rarely appeared in diplomatic occasions. He easily adapted to the working methods of the General Assembly and was good at personal negotiations, as he showed in his work with the EU.
Mr. Kellenberger's wife is Elizabeth Kellenberger Jossi, and she has two sons.
