In June 1977, with the approval of the State Council, the Ministry of Education formally approved the establishment of Zhengzhou Institute of Light Industry, and implemented a management system with the province as the main body and the dual leadership of Henan Province and the Ministry of Light Industry;In August, with the approval of the Organization Department and Propaganda Department of the CPC Henan Provincial Committee, the leading group for the establishment of Zhengzhou Light Industry College was established;In September, the Ministry of Light Industry decided to set up 12 undergraduate majors in the school, with a schooling period of four years;In October, Henan Provincial Revolutionary Committee decided to incorporate Zhengzhou Electric Machinery Factory, which was originally rebuilt by Zhengzhou Light Industry Electromechanical School, and Henan Light Industry Electromechanical School, which was established on the original campus, into Zhengzhou Light Industry College.

In September 1979, the school began to recruit 120 undergraduate students from five provinces and regions in central and southern China, 60 from each of the two majors of light industry machinery manufacturing process and equipment and light industry electrical automation.
In July 1980, the Ministry of Light Industry approved the school to establish a cigarette experimental workshop.[53]
In July 1982, China Tobacco Corporation and the school jointly launched the "National Training Course for Tobacco Leaders" to train leading cadres for China's tobacco industry.[54]

On March 30, 2024, the first plenary meeting of the Fifth Committee of Zhengzhou University of Light Industry of the Communist Party of China was held in the 316 conference room of the office building of the Science Campus. The Science Campus of Zhengzhou University of Light Industry, located at No. 136, Science Avenue, High tech Zone, Zhengzhou City, is a pioneer of Chinese foreign cooperation in running schools in Henan Province. It has the earliest IELTS test center in Henan Province, and has built nine international joint laboratories with foreign universities.As of May 2024, the school has characteristic disciplines such as food science and engineering, intelligent manufacturing of electrical equipment, hydrogen energy science and technology, and 22 provincial key disciplines.At the same time, the school also has 67 national, provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms, including the "Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Cold Chain Food Processing and Safety Control".[87]

Yuzhou Practice and Training Base of Zhengzhou University of Light Industry is located at No.1 Daxue Road, Yuzhou City, Xuchang City, Henan Province.
