1. Evolution and protection of genetic resources diversity: further collect genetic resources, especially the rich genetic resources of ethnic minorities and animals in southwest China, study the formation and evolution of genetic resources (diversity), especially the endangered mechanism of rare species and their protection strategies, and the relationship between the diversity and domestication of genetic resources of wild and domestic animals, To provide scientific basis for the protection and rational utilization of genetic resources;
2. The evolution of genes and genomes: take biological groups with different key evolutionary positions as the research object, study the laws of gene origin and evolution, the significance of gene adaptive evolution to environmental adaptation, the evolutionary model of gene functional pathways and networks, the basis of gene family structure and functional evolution and its evolutionary model and mechanism, the origin and evolution of genomes, and explore genes The formation mechanism and evolution law of the structure and function of gene family and genome in the process of biological evolution;
3. Genetic development and evolution Developmental biology Mechanisms, such as new genes, new gene expression and regulation mechanisms, contribute to species morphological evolution and adaptability.

Since 2001, the laboratory has published more than 300 SCI research papers and 26 SCI papers with impact factor>10, including research papers Nature 2 Science 1, Nature Genetics; One Nature Review Genetics, two Nature Reviews and one Science Review were invited to comment and summarize, which attracted wide attention and positive comments from international peers. The average impact factor of a single paper is 4.5, and the cumulative number of citations is nearly 1000. It has won one American Biodiversity Leadership Award, one Science and Technology Progress Award from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, six first prizes of provincial and ministerial level natural science awards, two second prizes of national natural science awards, and one outstanding contribution award of Yunnan natural science. Three doctoral students won the Special Award of the Dean's Scholarship of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and two won the National Hundred Excellent Doctoral Dissertations Award.
From 2006 to 2010, the laboratory undertook 181 national and provincial (departmental) scientific research projects, including 2 973 projects presided over and 4 participated in; Three major national science and technology projects and two national science and technology support plans; Innovative research group of National Natural Science Foundation of China 1 project, 3 Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 major research projects and 8 key projects; 3 major international cooperation projects; 9 major innovation projects of the Chinese Academy of Sciences [1]
The laboratory has undertaken the construction of the animal sub library of the national major scientific project "Southwest China Wildlife Germplasm Resources Bank", and has made significant progress in the collection of biodiversity resources. On this basis, the laboratory has taken the lead in organizing China's life barcode program, making China one of the four central nodes of the "iBOL International Major Program", He also led the organization of the "International Goat Genome Project" and participated in the organization of major international projects such as the "International Sheep Genome Project" as a major member, which had important international influence. Since 2006, the laboratory has organically combined resource advantages with scientific frontiers. Focusing on key scientific issues such as the evolution law of genetic resource diversity, the genetic mechanism of natural/artificial selection and biological adaptation, it has formed a batch of representative achievements with international influence in the pattern, process and mechanism of biodiversity evolution, and has published 318 SCI papers, including Nature, Science, Nat. Biotechnol., PNAS and other international top academic journals published 34 papers, including 20 papers by the first author (including co first author) or correspondence author (including co correspondence author). The average impact factor of the paper is 4.3, the average number of citations is 5.3, and the maximum number of citations for a single article is 116. In addition, the laboratory has also made major breakthroughs in the protection, recovery and sustainable utilization of genetic germplasm resources of endangered species, which has been reviewed by Nature, Science, Nature Rev. Genet. and other magazines. The laboratory also participated in the preparation of 7 monographs and applied for 4 patents. Since 2006, the laboratory has obtained National Natural Science Award Two second prizes, three first prizes of provincial and ministerial natural science awards, one second prize and one third prize respectively, and one third prize of Yunnan Science and Technology Achievement Award (technological invention category) [1]
By 2012, the laboratory had 15 research groups, 3 supporting departments, and 99 fixed researchers. It was a high-quality research team composed mainly of young and middle-aged people (with an average age of 35 years). Among the 15 discipline leaders (PIs), there are 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 3 national candidates for the Hundred Thousand Talents Project, 7 talents for the Hundred Talents Program, 2 leaders of the Young Scientists Group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the German Max Planck Society, and 2 high-end scientific and technological talents in Yunnan Province.
