Herzpoon was originally a chemical engineer specializing in photography. He is also an astronomer. He worked at the University of Gdyngan and Potsdam Observatory. In 1919, he was employed as Deputy Director of the University of Leiden Observatory and promoted to Director in 1935.
He first proposed the concept of absolute magnitude; In 1905, it was proposed that stars can be divided into giant stars and dwarf stars.
