Herzpoon was originally a chemical engineer specializing in photography. He is also an astronomer. He worked at the University of Gdyngan and Potsdam Observatory. In 1919, he was employed as Deputy Director of the University of Leiden Observatory and promoted to Director in 1935.
He first proposed the concept of absolute magnitude; In 1905, it was proposed that stars can be divided into giant stars and dwarf stars. He also noticed the relationship between the color and brightness of stars. His discovery did not attract people's attention at first. People did not pay attention to his research achievements until the American astronomer Henry Norris Russell published his discovery. Therefore, the spectrophotometer of constellations is called Herlotto.
In memory of his contribution to astronomy, Asteroid 1693 And a crater on the moon, both named after him.
