Chinese poetry recitation has a long history. In Zhuangzi, there is a sentence of "singing against trees". It can be seen that at least in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, it has been chanted for nearly 3000 years. [1]
Fuzhou has a large number of literary and artistic talents in history. It is also the birthplace of the "Tongguang Style" poetry school, and has rich soil for poetry creation and poetry recitation. [1]

Chanting is a traditional musical form of poetry. The traditional intonation is between recitation and general songs, and belongs to a variety of folk music. Chanting can show the beauty of rhythm and artistic conception of traditional poetry, which is different from the form of special songs for poetry. Chanting tunes are divided according to sentence patterns. Each sentence pattern has a tune that can be set to sing for promotion. Fuzhou has beautiful traditional chanting tunes and many schools.
Compared with general songs, the intonation of poetry focuses more on literariness and language, and pays more attention to the tone (tone), rhyme, artistic conception and charm of poetry. After the early Tang Dynasty, "modern poetry" (rhythmic poetry, quatrains) and words not only emphasize rhyme, but also tone and tone. At the "rhythm point" (the juncture of the foot) of poetry, tone and tone appear alternately to fully present the beauty of the tone of Chinese characters. Therefore, in addition to adapting to the tone of flat and oblique tones in melody, the intonation tune also implements the principle of "flat length, narrow and short" in rhythm processing. The flat tone drags (especially at the end of the sentence rhyme), and the narrow tone stops in time; If the oblique tone rhymes and the melody has to be dragged, add a pause after the rhyme word for a brief pause, and then drag (or add "background words" to drag).
Poetry recitation is divided according to sentence patterns. Seven character poems, five character poems, four character poems and words have different intonation tones. Therefore, it is required that the reciter can be flexible, merge or expand the basic melody. At the same time, it is necessary to achieve proper cohesion and smooth operation. Only when he can both observe and transform, can he convey the form and spirit, can he master the characteristics of poetry recitation. [1]

Inheriting Characters

Chen Lubai, Han nationality, native of Gulou District, Fuzhou City, was the second group of provincial representative inheritors of Fujian Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Project "Poetry Recitation" in November 1925. Influenced by his mother Xue Nianjuan, Chen Lubai began to recite poems when he was young. He followed his mother and learned the intonation of poems from He Zhendai. Among them, the intonation tune of Ci and seven character poetry is learned from He Zhendai and Shi Hao respectively, while the tune of four character and five character poetry is adapted and innovated based on the intonation tune of He Zhendai's "Ci". His main representative works include The Forgotten Southern Dream, The Dream Tree, Humen Sadness and Joy, etc. Chen Lubai is also committed to offering many poetry recitation lectures, teaching and disseminating knowledge and skills of poetry recitation with the "Collection of Chinese Classical Poetry Recitation" as the teaching material. Many successors, including Kuai Weihua and Xiao Bing, have been cultivated. In addition, Chen Lubai also insisted on actively participating in poetry gatherings, writer salons and poetry recitation performances at the gala. Chen Lubai has been awarded the title of "Outstanding Contribution Award for Inheriting the Quintessence of Chinese Culture" and "People's Meritorious Artist". [2]
