Xi'an International Studies University, or XISU for short, is located in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China.The school is a full-time ordinary college run and managed by the People's Government of Shaanxi Province[4][6]。It is one of the first four foreign language colleges and universities established in New China[98]It is the only institution of higher learning in the northwest with a complete range of major foreign languages, and one of the members of Shaanxi Provincial High level University, New Silk Road University Alliance, Chang'an Alliance, and Youth Diplomacy University Alliance[96], a member of the Global Alliance of Foreign Studies Universities[97]。
In 1951, the Russian Department of the School of Literature of Lanzhou University, the Russian Group of the Department of Foreign Languages of Northwestern University, and the Russian Majors merged to form Northwestern Russian College.In 1952, the Russian language class of the Party School of the Northwest Bureau of the Communist Party of China was incorporated into the Northwest Russian College, renamed Xi'an Foreign Studies University in 1958, and renamed Xi'an Foreign Studies University in 2006.It began to enroll graduate students in 1979, became an authorized unit for master's degree in 1986, became an authorized unit for doctor's degree in 2013, obtained the right to grant a doctor's degree in the first level discipline of foreign language and literature, and was approved as a post doctoral research mobile station in 2014.In 2023, it was rated as the national language promotion base by the Ministry of Education and the National Language Commission[5]。
As of April 2024, the school has four campuses: Chang'an, Yanta, Zhenhua and Yahe[6]。The school covers a total area of 1593 mu, with a building area of about 1.063 million square meters. Northwest Russian Academy
In 1950, in order to meet the needs of national economic construction and political diplomacy, the Ministry of Education decided to establish a foreign language college in the northwest.In 1952, the Russian Department of Northwest University, the Russian Department of Lanzhou University, and the Russian class of the Party School of the Northwest Bureau of the Communist Party of China were merged into the "Northwest Russian College", the predecessor of Xi'an Foreign Studies University[13]。

In 1958, the Ministry of Education approved the Northwest Russian College to be renamed "Xi'an Foreign Language Institute" and began to enroll undergraduates.In the same year, English majors were added.In 1959, the school added German and French majors.In 1960, the Spanish major was added and later merged with the French major to form the French department.Since the beginning of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, the normal teaching order of schools has been destroyed.In 1972, the main body of the school moved back to Xi'an, and the teaching order began to recover.In 1975, the school added a Japanese major in the Russian Department and changed its name to "Russian Japanese Department".In 1979, the school began to enroll graduate students.In 1986, it was approved as an authorized unit for master's degree[16]。In 1994, Shaanxi Foreign Language Teachers College merged with Xi'an Foreign Language Institute[6]。In 1995, Xi'an Foreign Languages College and Shaanxi Foreign Languages Teachers College merged to form a new Xi'an Foreign Languages College.Xi'an International Studies University set up a business school in 2001[15]。In 2002, the school held a celebration meeting for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the school, and built the "Triumphal Arch" of the Yanta campus, and the English Department was renamed "English College"[16]。In 2004, the Japanese Language Institute was renamed as the Oriental Language and Culture Institute[17]。

In 2006, Xi'an International Studies University was renamed as Xi'an International Studies University, the fourth foreign studies university in China[16]。In 2011, it was listed by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government as a high-level university to be built during the "12th Five Year Plan" period.In 2012, a multilingual base for international promotion of Chinese (Xi'an) was established with the approval of the Hanban[1]。In July 2013, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to become a doctoral degree awarding unit, and was granted the right to grant the doctoral degree of the first level discipline of foreign language and literature.In September 2014, with the approval of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the National Postdoctoral Management Committee, a mobile postdoctoral research station for foreign language and literature discipline was established.In August 2018, it was listed as a first-class discipline construction university in China by Shaanxi Provincial Government[6]。In 2020, the European College will be merged by the former German Institute and the former Western Language and Culture Institute[18]；In the same year, he joined the World Federation of French Universities[19]。In May 2021, he joined the member units of The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI)[92]。On December 22, 2021, he joined the Youth Diplomacy University Alliance[93]。In March 2022, he was selected into the "New Youth Global Competency Talent Training Plan" of the Education International Exchange Association of the Ministry of Education[20]。In May, the university was approved as an independent pilot unit for the construction of "one-stop" student community comprehensive management model in colleges and universities nationwide[94]。On October 9, 2023, Xi'an Foreign Studies University and Xinjiang Normal University signed a counterpart support and co construction agreement[21]。On December 10, 2023, Xi'an International Studies University will become one of the first "co built universities" of Shaanxi International Communication Center[22]。

Foreign cooperation
Swansea University and Xi'an International Studies University have established a cooperative relationship since 2008 and have carried out friendly cooperation for 15 years.The implementation of the cooperation project has promoted the mutual exchange between the two universities and the sharing of educational resources[59]。

In 2013, 20 achievements of Xi'an Foreign Studies University won the "2013 Outstanding Achievement Award of Humanities and Social Sciences Research in Shaanxi Universities"[64]。
In 2015, the 20 project of Xi'an Foreign Studies University was approved as a special scientific research project of Shaanxi Provincial Department of Education[65]。
In 2016, Xi'an International Studies University 4 Project was approved to be funded by the National Social Science Fund in 2016[66]。
In 2021, Xi'an International Studies University's National Social Science and Self Science Foundation and the Ministry of Education's Humanities and Social Sciences Project were approved for 23 projects. Community culture
In 2021, the art troupe of Xi'an International Studies University selected 26 students to participate in the May 4th Evening Party of CCTV on behalf of the school. In the same year, the 14th National Games was held in the school to recruit actors and volunteers. The university art troupe undertook the task of recruiting actors and sent a large number of talents for the opening ceremony of the 14th National Games[73]。
