On the night of New Year's Day in 1965, Zijinshan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences found a fuzzy new celestial body in the sky of Gemini with binoculars, which was confirmed to be a comet by re observation on the evening of January 5. After reporting to the International Astronomical Union, it was confirmed that this was a new short period comet, named 62P/Tsuchinshan, which was translated into Chinese as "Zijinshan 1" comet (62P). This was the first comet discovered by Chinese since the founding of New China. [2]

In March 2023, it was learned from the Zijinshan Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the near Earth object detection and solar system object research team of the observatory made progress in the study of the evolution of comet activity, taking the two comets first discovered in China as the research objects. The research results were published in the international academic journals Astrophysics and Monthly Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society. [1]

Operation mode

Comet Zijinshan 1 returned to an ellipse with the sun as its focus. The perihelion (the closest point to the sun) of the orbit is 1.486 AU from the sun center, and the aphelion (the farthest point from the sun) is 5.563 AU from the sun center, and the perihelion, aphelion and the sun center are on the same straight line.

Operation

Comet Zijinshan 1 (62P) passed the perihelion in December 2023 and in January 2024 On the 29th, the distance from the earth was the shortest. [2]
