Scientific research field

According to the official website of the laboratory in July 2020, the State Key Laboratory of Systematic and Evolutionary Botany (Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences) studies the pattern, formation and change of plant species diversity, reconstructs plant phylogeny, and reveals the process and mechanism of biological evolution; At the same time, facing the needs of China's national strategy, we will study the characteristic variation and genetic background of important resource plants, especially the evolution and development mechanism of key traits. [1]
  • Main research contents
(1) Plant classification and resource protection and utilization: investigate and study plant species diversity in China and surrounding countries, compile plant chronicles, and make taxonomic revisions to important taxa; Establish plant resource database, geographic information management system and rapid species identification system to provide guidance and scientific support for biodiversity conservation and resource mining and utilization.
(2) Phylogeny and biogeography: study the origin and evolution history of each phylum of plants, reconstruct the tree of plant life, and provide a theoretical framework for the study of plant life phenomena; To reveal the geographical distribution pattern, formation process and biological and abiotic causes of important plant groups; To explore the basic principles and methods of plant phylogenetic reconstruction and improve the current classification system.
(3) Adaptive evolution and conservation genetics: study the genetic variation and differentiation of plants and their relationship with the environment, reveal the pattern and mechanism of species formation, and explore the molecular mechanism of adaptive evolution; To study the interspecific interaction and reveal the mechanism of coevolution; develop Endangered plant and Resource plant To explore the mechanism of endangered species and conservation strategies.
(4) Evolutionary development and genomics: study the origin, variation and development mechanism of plant organs and structures, and reveal the evolution mechanism of key traits; To study the structure, function and evolution of plant genome, explore the origin, differentiation and functional significance of important gene families, and reveal the relationship between phenotype, gene and environment and their evolutionary mechanism.
