landforms

Announce
edit
Several large meteorite craters are located on the boundary of Jiuhai, the largest of which is the Flamastoro crater (124 km) submerged by lava, merging with the southern shore of the Moon Sea; Near the northwest coast is a group of prominent 100 km sized craters: Theophilus crater, Cyril crater and Catherine crater; Another obvious surface feature is the "Ghost Crater" - Daguerre Crater in the north of Jiuhai, which is almost completely covered by lava.

Location context

Announce
edit
Jiuhai is located in the center of an impact basin with a diameter of 860 kilometers. The basin was formed 3.8-39 billion years ago, marking the beginning of the Jiuhai period in the lunar geological age. The most well preserved (southwest) part of the basin edge is called the Altai Cliff.

geology

Announce
edit
The lava stratum of Jiuhai is younger than the basin itself. The Yuehai stratum is about 1000 meters deep, mainly belonging to the Jiuhai period and the early Yuhai period, but accompanied by the late Yuhai geological stratum. The west Ophelius crater on the northeast side of the moon sea is in the Elatosnian period, so the crater is younger than the southeast of the moon sea. The large subsidence on the northwest side of the Moon Sea formed a slightly arched graben.

scientific research

In 1968, the Doppler trackers of five US lunar orbiting spacecraft detected a mass tumor or gravity field in the center of Jiuhai. Later orbiters, such as Lunar Prospector and Holy Grail, confirmed and accurately mapped the mass tumor.
