A brief history of the predecessor

  • Institute of Physics, National Academia Sinica
In January 1928, the Physics Group of the Institute of Physics, Chemistry and Industry of the Central Research Institute was established upon the decision of the Preparatory Committee of the Central Research Institute.
In March 1928, as one of the three groups of the Institute of Physics, Chemistry and Industry, the Physics Group was officially established at the temporary site at No. 899, Xiafei Road, Shanghai. Ding Xielin was employed as the director of the Physics Group.
On June 9, 1928, the National Central Research Institute was officially established. Subsequently, the physical and chemical industry research institute is divided into three research institutes, namely, physics, chemistry and engineering. The Institute of Physics of the National Academia Sinica was established, and June 9 was designated as the anniversary of the Institute. Ding Xielin, the first director of the Institute, was appointed.
In the 20 years from 1928 to 1949, the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences experienced two terms of director, three changes in internal organization, and seven changes of location. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, they were displaced from place to place, moving from Kunming, Guilin and Chongqing to Beipei. After the War of Resistance Against Japan, they returned to Shanghai and moved to Nanjing in April 1948.
  • Institute of Physics, National Beiping Research Institute
On September 9, 1929, the National Peiping Research Institute was officially established. The National Peiping Research Institute has secondary institutions such as the Ministry of Physics and Chemistry, and each ministry has its own research institute. As a subordinate institution of the Ministry of Physics and Chemistry, the Institute of Physics of the National Beiping Research Institute was established at the same time with the Institute. The first director of the Institute was Li Shuhua, vice president of the Institute. The Institute is located at No. 9, Dayuodeng Hutong, Donghuangchenggen, Beijing.
In 1935, all ministries were abolished and the Institute was directly under the jurisdiction of the Institute.
After the outbreak of the Anti Japanese War, the research and test equipment was moved to Kunming with the staff, and returned to Peiping in the winter of 1945.

Merger and renaming of the two firms

In the first ten days of February 1950, the Chinese Academy of Sciences decided to merge the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences with the Institute of Physics of the Northern Academy of Sciences to form the Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; On May 19, the Government Affairs Council appointed Yan Jici as the first director of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Lu Xueshan as the deputy director; On August 15, the Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was officially established, which is located in Donghuang Chenggen, Beijing. Due to the scattered personnel and equipment at that time, and the inconvenient transportation, the relocation was basically completed in June 1952.
On October 8, 1958, with the approval of the Executive Meeting of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was renamed the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and moved to the current site of Zhongguancun. [2]

Scientific research achievements

  • Project undertaking
In 2019, the Institute of Physics undertook a total of 675 research projects (including 279 new projects). Among them, he presided over 23 national key research and development projects (6 new projects), and presided over 3 973 projects (including national major scientific research projects); Presided over 25 key programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (5 new programs), 7 programs of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (1 new program), and 7 major research programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (3 new programs); Presided over 1 and 4 strategic leading science and technology projects of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Preside over 1 key deployment project of the Institute; Chaired 12 major instrument development projects (including 2 new projects). [1]
  • Main achievements
In 2019, the Institute of Physics realized the folding of graphene nanostructures with atomic level precision control for the first time in the world, making it the smallest "graphene origami" in the world. For the first time in the world, a conductivity platform with nearly quantized Mayorana zero energy mode was observed, and key experimental evidence for the existence of Mayorana zero energy mode in iron-based superconductors was given. A unique high-throughput experimental method was developed with the concept of material genetic engineering, which realized the rapid screening of amorphous alloys, developed new materials of high-temperature and high-strength bulk amorphous alloys, and broke through the service temperature limit of existing amorphous alloys. An efficient and fully automatic algorithm is created to detect the non trivial topology in non-magnetic materials, which not only improves the efficiency of exploring new topological materials, but also lays a foundation for high-throughput computing. Using a device with 12 superconducting qubits to form a one-dimensional chain structure, we realized the simulation of strongly correlated quantum walking with our collaborators. Using the fully connected 20 superconducting quantum bit device, we successfully realized the preparation of 20 quantum bit multi-component Schrodinger cat state with our collaborators. Combined with the static structure of the cryoelectron microscope of the collaborators, the precise measurement of the single molecular dynamics process was achieved, and the molecular mechanism of the chromatin remodeling factor regulating DNA slippage on the nucleosome was deeply analyzed. The work of "developing high-temperature bulk metallic glass based on material genetic engineering" was selected as one of the top ten scientific advances in China in 2019; "The latest research shows that about 24% of materials in nature may have topological structures" was selected as one of the top ten scientific and technological progress news in China in 2019; The work of "completing the quantum walking experiment of strongly correlated entanglement system for the first time" and "realizing the controllable folding of graphene nanostructures with atomic precision" was selected as the scientific and technological innovation highlight achievement of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019. [1]
In 2023, Bai Xuedong, a researcher at the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences/National Research Center for Condensed Matter Physics in Beijing, and Wang Lifen, an associate researcher team, have successfully observed the growth and crystallization process of ice at molecular resolution and characterized the evolution of structure in situ by developing in situ freeze electron microscopy, using aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy and low-dose electron beam imaging technology. [12]
