Wenzhou University was formed by the merger of Wenzhou Normal University (founded in 1956) and the former Wenzhou University (founded in 1984) in 2004. After the evolution of "the merger of two schools and the integration of seven schools", the school running source can be traced back to Wenzhou Normal School founded in 1933.[2][11]

In 1933, Mr. Su Chu donated all the assets of the private Zhenglou Primary School (estimated at about 31900 silver dollars) to the province. On this basis, Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education founded Wenzhou Normal School.
In 1942, Zhejiang Rui'an Normal School was founded.
In 1943, Zhejiang Pingyang Normal School was founded.
In 1956, Wenzhou Normal College was founded.
In 1958, Wenzhou Normal College was upgraded to Wenzhou Normal College. In September, Wenzhou Normal College was merged with Wenzhou Normal College.
In 1959, Wenzhou Normal School was separated from the Teachers College and still ran its own school.
In 1964, Wenzhou Normal University was abolished and Wenzhou Teaching and Research Correspondence Station was established.
In 1971, May 7th Normal School in Wenzhou was established on the basis of teaching and research correspondence stations in Wenzhou.
In 1971, Wenzhou Normal School and Wenzhou May 7th Normal School were merged and named Wenzhou Normal College.

On December 27, 2019, Zhejiang Province and Wenzhou City signed an agreement, making Wenzhou University a "key university jointly built by provinces and cities".
On January 27, 2021, the Ministry of Education approved Oujiang College (independent college) of Wenzhou University to be established asWenzhou Institute of Technology。[12]
In December 2022, Wenzhou University was awarded as the comprehensive research base of Zhejiang Overseas Chinese Research Association.[33]

The university has won 185 national, provincial and ministerial awards, among which, as the first completion unit, it has won the second prize of the National Technological Invention Award and the first prize of the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Achievement Award for Scientific Research in Colleges and Universities (Humanities and Social Sciences). Our teachers, as the first completion unit, have won two second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and participated in winning the second prize of the National Natural Science Award.[3]

The school emblem includes the emblem and badge.The logo of the school is a round logo with double round sets. School History Museum
Located in the south campus of Wenzhou University, Wenzhou University History Museum is a two-story circular building facing the lake and connected with the school administration building, with a total area of more than 3000 square meters.[73]The museum is divided into three areas: historical tracing, today's Wenzhou University, and temporary exhibition. Through the concept of "public awareness, high mountain, and many", the museum adopts comprehensive means to arrange exhibitions, and reflects the historical heritage and practical vitality of the school with artifacts, works, photos, manuscripts, models, sculptures, and audio-visual images[74]。
