In the late 1920s, Zhang Jingjiang, Chairman of the Construction Committee of the Kuomintang, surveyed the Huainan mining area in Jiulonggang and other places on the bank of the Huaihe River in Anhui Province for operation and development, considering that the supply of coal and coke is related to the development of national industry. The coal it mined was originally transported to Bengbu via the Huaihe River waterway, and then transferred to Pukou via the Jinpu Railway. The journey was slow and costly. To this end, the special railway for Huainan coal mine will be built. Its role is to connect the Yangtze River and Huaihe River, to facilitate coal transportation, and to develop the traffic in northern and central Anhui and connect southern Anhui.
The survey began in the winter of 1933.
In January 1934, the Huainan Railway was still in the survey stage, and the Ministry of Railways had clearly identified the road as the special railway for Huainan coal mines, and explained that 15 years after the completion of the road, if the Ministry of Railways thought it was necessary to recover the operation of the road, it could be converted into public business according to the estimated cost.
The project was officially started in June 1934. On February 1, 1935, the passenger shuttle bus from Huainan to Hefei was opened.
Completed on December 12, 1935, the original name of "Tongjiang Railway" was renamed Huainan Coal Mine Railway because of the infringement problem with Jinpu Railway. The subgrade was designed as a regular railway, but the narrow gauge light rail and corresponding sleepers were laid. There are more than 20 stations along the line, including 4 second-class stations, 4 third class stations and 12 fourth class stations; Each station is provided with 2 platforms. Tianjia'an, Datong, Jiulonggang and Hefei are the four second-class stations. [4]
It was officially opened to traffic in January 1936, costing 4.5 million yuan.
In 1937, the Japanese army invaded and the anti Japanese army was flourishing. In order to meet the strategic needs of the Kuomintang army, the road was ordered to be destroyed.
In 1937, the construction committee transferred the Huainan coal mine and special railway to Huainan Mining and Road Co., Ltd. for operation, and at the same time, it paid 8 million yuan of commercial shares, with a specified service life of 30 years. On October 26, 1937, the Construction Committee of the Nanjing Government transferred the Huainan Railway and Huainan Coal Mine together to the China Construction Bank Corporation, which was affiliated to the Song Ziwen consortium, and became a private enterprise. It was renamed Huainan Road and Mine Corporation, which operated coal and railways in a unified way. All funds for the construction of Huainan Railway were allocated by the Nanjing Government. The board of directors of Huainan Road and Mining Company consists of 12 people, including Song Ziwen, Zhang Jingjiang, Cheng Shifan and Du Yuesheng. The completed Huainan Railway adopts 16 improved locomotives, more than 300 coal cars and one passenger train introduced from the Czech Republic. Centered on Jiulonggang, the dispatching, management and maintenance organizations are all located in Jiulonggang.
In the spring of 1938, when the Japanese army invaded Nanjing, the Nanjing government ordered to blow up the whole Huainan railway line.
On June 4, 1938, Japanese troops occupied Huainan mining area and railway.
In July 1938, the whole Huainan railway line fell into the Japanese enemy's hands, and the Japanese army restored the use of roads and mines.
On April 21, 1939, Japan's "Xingya Liaison Department in China" merged Datong Mine and Jiulonggang Mine, and formed Huainan Coal Mine Co., Ltd. together with Wang Jingwei's puppet government. The company is headquartered in Shanghai and controlled by the Japanese military headquarters. At this time, the railway transportation has been damaged, and the coal produced from the mine will be transported to the Tianjia'an wharf by manpower or horses.
In 1940, the Japanese East China Railway Co., Ltd. repaired the railway from Jiulonggang to Yuxikou, and mobilized 32 locomotives to restore the railway transportation from Jiulonggang to Tianjia'an and from Jiulonggang to Yuxikou. Later, the railway from Shuijiahu to Bengbu was built to connect with the Tianjin Pujiang Railway, which is convenient for transporting coal to Nanjing and Shanghai.
In 1941, the Japanese army demolished the track equipment from Shuijiahu to Yuxikou and built it as a branch line from Shuijiahu to Bengbu Jin-Pu Railway Track connection.
In August 1945, Japan surrendered, and the Bengbu branch line was destroyed by it, leaving no bridge sleepers, stations and other buildings burned. The entire Huainan Railway only has a 27km line from Tianjia'an to Shuijiahu. In October, the reception committee was led by Wu Jingqing and Hu Weizhong. At that time, in addition to the 27km line, there were 6 locomotives, 10 passenger cars and 253 freight cars that could barely be used. After receiving in November, Huainan Railway Bureau was established, with Wu Jingqing as the director and Hu Weizhong and Ning Shufan as the deputy directors. The section from Shuijiahu to Bengbu, about 61 kilometers long, was originally built by Japanese troops who demolished the line from Shuijiahu to Yuxikou during the Japanese occupation period, and then was damaged by it, leaving nothing.
After Japan surrendered at the end of 1945, the Huainan coal mine and railway were still taken over by Song Ziwen's Huainan Railway and Mining Company.
From the spring of 1946, the Beng Branch Line was repaired and completed in late May with the assistance of the Central China Railway Management Committee, and was officially opened to traffic on June 1. At that time, it was hastily repaired and simplified to maintain the traffic. In case of flood, it was dangerous and could not be fully used. By the dry season in winter of that year, the improvement and reinforcement project had begun again, and the houses of Bengbu and Luqiao stations and the guard houses along the line had been expanded and built respectively. Before the rainy season in the summer of 1947, the renovation project of Beng Branch Line was completed, and the operation was improved.
In the autumn of 1946, the line from Shuijiahu to Hefei was about 70 kilometers long and began to survey and repair.
In February 1948, the line from Shuijiahu to Hefei started construction and was open to traffic on October 10, 1948. So far, the three lines of the Hydration Line, Shuibeng Line and Shuitian Line have all been connected, and intermodal transportation has been developed with the Jinpu Line. For the section from Hefei to Yuxikou, although the track equipment has been moved to Shuibeng Line, the subgrade can be basically maintained in the old state with slight damage, so it is not too difficult to recover. The track equipment was ordered from Canada by Huainan Mining Road Co., Ltd., and the rest were manufactured and repaired by ourselves.
In January 1949, Huainan and Bengbu were liberated one after another, and the Huainan Railway was nationalized and returned to the people.
In November 1949, according to the order of the Ministry of Railways, Huainan Railway Bureau was revoked and merged into Bengbu Railway Branch.
At the end of 1986, the Bengbu Huainan New Line was completed and opened to traffic.
On January 26, 2010, the electrification reconstruction of Huainan Hefei section of Huainan Line was started.
At the end of December 2016, the expansion and reconstruction of Huainan Hefei section of Huainan Line was completed.
