geology

Boas volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica and the largest active volcano with intermittent eruptions in the world. It is composed of andesite and basalt andesite. [3]

landforms

With a diameter of 1320 meters and a depth of 300 meters, Boas Crater is a volcano viewing spot in Costa Rica. Boaz volcano is a vast and lush volcano with three craters on a north-south line. There are several eroded calderas, volcanic cones and two crater lakes on or near the top of the mountain. Boaz volcano is a layered volcano with an altitude of 2708m. [3]

hydrology

A north-south fracture cuts the Boas volcano and extends to the lower side of the northern slope, where the Congo layered volcano and several Mayr volcanic lakes are formed. Botos crater lake at the southernmost end is cold and clear. Its last eruption was about 7500 years ago. Laguna Caliente in the north is one of the most acidic natural lakes in the world, and its PH value is close to zero. [3]

Activity History

There were 60 eruptions of Boas volcano in Holocene. [3]
Boas volcano is the largest active volcano with intermittent eruption in the world, and its history can be traced back as far as 1100 years ago.
Since the first historic volcanic eruption in 1828, the Boas volcano has been frequently erupted with steam and steam magma. A crater lake of water that usually erupts like a fountain. [3]
Since 1828, Boaz volcano has erupted at least 39 times, and is almost in a continuous mild state of activity. Most volcanic eruptions are steam eruptions, which are caused by the interaction between lava and water in the crater lake. The intensity of the explosion varies. Some of the explosions sprayed the ejecta 500 meters above the lake. [3]
On January 25, 1910, Mount Boaz erupted 640000 tons of volcanic ash.
From 1952 to 1954, the Boas volcano continuously erupted a large amount of volcanic ash and volcanic rocks to the nearby areas. Since then, it has been in a dormant state.
On the morning of April 14, 2017, the Boas volcano erupted five times in total, of which the largest eruption occurred at 7:57 a.m., gas, volcanic ash, hot rock debris and volcanic bombs spewed out of the crater, and the height of the eruption column exceeded 3000 meters. [1]
2024 local time April From the 2nd, Costa Rica's Boas volcano began to erupt. Sulfur is ejected at a height of 200 meters. For safety reasons, the Boaz Volcano National Park was closed on the 2nd. [4]

Volcanic disaster

In 1989, the crater lake in Boaz gradually dried up. Later, researchers found a liquid sulfur pool with a diameter of about 2 meters. This is the first time that a liquid sulfur lake has been observed on the earth's surface. Sulfur may be the product of regasification of fumaroles. Sulfur volcanoes are active on Jupiter's moon Io.
By the end of 1995, strong volcanic fumarole activity continued to occur at the top of Boas Mountain near the volcanic lake. [3]

scientific research

The Boas volcano is monitored by the Volcano Observatory of Costa Rica National University (OVSICORI-UNA), and most of the data comes from their weekly briefings. Monitoring means include earthquake, gravity, hydrochemistry, etc. Since 1978, hydrochemistry has been used to monitor the volcanic activity of Costa Rica Boas, which is the best studied ultra acid crater lake on the earth.
