Shenyang University was founded in 1980. Its history can be traced back to Fengtian Industrial School founded in 1905 and Xinmin Public School founded in 1906;In the long-term development process, it has merged Shenyang University of Finance and Economics, Shenyang Industrial College (formerly directly under the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry), Shenyang Institute of Education, Xinmin Normal University and other colleges;Obtained in 2003Master degree conferring right；In 2007, inEvaluation of Undergraduate Teaching Level of the Ministry of EducationExcellent;In 2010, it was approved as a postdoctoral research station;In 2012, it was approved to serve the national special needs doctor talent training project.[2]

In May 1953, it was changed to Shenyang Machinery Industry School under the Ministry of Heavy Industry of the Central People's Government
In 1956, it was changed to Shenyang Metallurgical Machinery Industrial School, Ministry of Metallurgical Industry.
In December 1958, the school was upgraded to a junior college and named Shenyang Metallurgical Machinery College.
In June 1963, the junior college was suspended and the secondary school was reopened. It was named Shenyang Metallurgical Machinery School.
In 1972, the school resumed enrollment and was placed under the leadership of Shenyang Municipal Metallurgical Bureau.
In 1973, it was put under the leadership of Liaoning Metallurgical Bureau.
In December 1978, with the approval of the State Council, it was restored to a regular college, still named Shenyang Metallurgical Machinery College, and under the leadership of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry.
In 1992, with the consent of the Ministry of Metallurgy and the approval of the State Education Commission, the school was renamed Shenyang Industrial College.[5]

In 1905, Zhao Erxun set up a "Normal School" in Shenyang.[6]
In 1906, on the basis of the establishment of "teacher training centers" in all provinces and counties of Liaoning, "simple teacher training departments" were established in Xinmin, Liaoyang and Fengcheng.
In 1910, Xinmin Public School stopped recruiting students.
In 1912, Xinmin Public School was restored.
In 1915, Xinmin Public School was renamed as Xinmin County Normal School.
In 1923, Xinmin County Normal School was renamed as Xinmin County Normal Primary Secondary School.
In 1931, Xinmin County Normal Junior High School stopped enrolling students.
In 1933, Xinmin County Teachers' Junior High School was restored.
In 1938, Xinmin County Normal Primary School was transformed into Fengtian Provincial Xinmin First National College (Agricultural Science).
In 1946, Fengtian Xinmin No. 1 National College was renamed as Liaoning Xinmin No. 1 Middle School and later as Liaoning Xinmin Normal School
In 1948, Liaoning Xinmin Normal School was renamed as Liaobei Xinmin Normal School.
In 1949, Xinmin Normal School in northern Liaoning Province was renamed as Xinmin Normal School in western Liaoning Province
In 1953, Liaoning Xinmin Normal School was renamed Liaoning Xinmin Normal School.
In 1978, the May 7th Teachers' School in Xinmin County was renamed Shenyang Xinmin Normal School.[7]

In 1998, the former State Education Commission revoked the former Shenyang University and the former Shenyang Institute of Technology, and renamed it Shenyang University.
In 1999, Shenyang Staff College of Arts and Engineering was incorporated into Shenyang University, and Shenyang Xinmin Normal School and Shenyang Normal School were incorporated into Shenyang Normal College.
In October 2011, the university was selected into the second batch of excellent engineer education and training programs of the Ministry of Education.[10]
In 2012, the university's doctoral talent training project of "contaminated site remediation and risk management" was officially approved, and the doctoral degree was awarded according to the main supporting disciplines of the project, environmental science and engineering. The university's declared doctoral talent training project for serving national special needs was successfully approved by the Academic Degrees Office of the State Council, and became one of the local universities with doctoral training qualifications.
In August 2014, the university was approved to have 4 master's degree authorization points.In December, the university successfully obtained the qualification of a regular university to enroll overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students.[11-12]
In 2015, the university was approved as one of the first 10 pilot universities for transformation and development in the province.In the same year, Shenyang University andShengjing Bank Sign the strategic cooperation agreement.[13]
In March 2016, five master's degree authorization points of the university passed the special evaluation of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.[14]In December, it was selected as one of the first demonstration universities of deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform in Liaoning Province.
In April 2017, the school was approved as the key construction unit of the provincial training base.In July, the school andHuawei Technologies Co., LtdShenzhen Xunfang Technology Co., Ltd. signed a tripartite school enterprise strategic cooperation agreement and jointly established the "Huawei Institute of Information and Network Technology, Shenyang University".[15-16]
In March 2018, the school was selected into the first batch of "new engineering" research and practice projects of the Ministry of Education. In July, the school andShenyang Daily Media Group Co., LtdSign the strategic cooperation agreement.[17]In August, Shenyang University signed a comprehensive deepening cooperation agreement with Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.[18-19]
On November 29, 2019, Shenyang Municipal Government issued the Opinions on Supporting Shenyang University to Build a First class University of the Same Kind in China.[20]
In November 2020, the school became the eighth batch of "Overseas Chinese International Cultural Exchange Base" selected units.[53]
