Historical culture

edit
The origin of Changzhou's nickname, "Longcheng", has not been determined. At present, there are three main explanations.
The first is from a folk legend: long ago, nine princes of the Dragon King of Donghai fought with each other, and six dragons came to Changzhou, so Changzhou was called "Six Dragon City", or Dragon City for short; The second is that the ancient city wall of Changzhou looks like a tortoise. The ancients thought that tortoises were dragon species, so they called Changzhou the Dragon City; The third is that the Qi and Liang dynasties in the Southern and Northern Dynasties saw 15 emperors from Changzhou. The emperors were also called the real dragon emperor, so Changzhou was called the Dragon City. Emperor Qianlong inspected the south of the Yangtze River and inscribed the plaque of "Dragon City Elephant Sect" when he came to Changzhou.
In folklore, a long time ago, there was a Jiulong Mountain in the northwest of Changzhou. There was an ancient temple on the mountain. Hongzhi, the monk in charge of the temple, dreamed of the nine princes of the Dragon King of the East China Sea and the mountain god of Jiulong Mountain. Later, he led the monks to beat the drums and bell, helping him defeat his brother who came to seize the territory. After the war, the two dragons headed fled to Yixing Mountain, and the other six dragons fled to Changzhou County. When people in the county learned that six heavenly dragons were coming to Changzhou, they built six color dragon boats on the Dragon Boat Festival every year and competed in Baiyun River. Therefore, Changzhou has been called "Six Dragon City" since ancient times. Hong Liangji, a famous poet of the Qing Dynasty from Changzhou, recorded in "A Chronicle of Other Families" that every year around the Dragon Boat Festival, there are dragon boat races in Baiyun Creek. There are five colored dragons in the city, big and small green dragons in the east gate, golden dragons and white dragons in the west gate, and black dragons in the north gate. The flags and umbrellas fly, gongs and drums shout to the sky, and six colorful dragon boats shuttle in the streams, competing to reflect each other. [95]
