In 1989, the State Key Laboratory of Plant Cell and Chromosome Engineering was founded with the support of the World Bank loan. At the beginning of the establishment of the laboratory, there were only five research groups, which had been committed to the research of wheat cell and chromosome engineering.
In October 1995, the laboratory passed the national acceptance and was officially opened to the public at home and abroad. It is one of the national key laboratories established earlier in China.
In 1971, the laboratory obtained the first regenerated plant of wheat pollen haploid in the world, and deeply studied the expression rule of pollen gamete genotype in regenerated plants, chromosome recombination and variation mechanism in haploid plants and other theoretical issues.
In 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016, the national key laboratories achieved good results. [2] [4]

  • Biotechnology platform
The biotechnology platform consists of two parts: plant genetic transformation platform and plant gene fixed-point transformation platform. It is mainly located in the research institute's crop gene function analysis and molecular breeding support platform. In terms of technology research and development and platform services, it has gradually standardized and programmed. The main achievements include: 1. It has successfully built the wheat genetic transformation technology system and large-scale technology platform. From 2011 to 2012, 183 plasmids were transformed for 16 research groups inside and outside the Institute, and more than 11000 independent transgenic plants were obtained; 2) A large-scale genetic transformation platform for rice, maize and short stalk grass was established; 3) TALEN gene fixed-point transformation technology system has been successfully established in rice, wheat, corn, soybean, petunia, and other species, and has now provided gene fixed-point transformation services for 11 research groups inside and outside the institute.   • Plant phenotype platform
The plant phenotype platform is equipped with five imaging units: visible light, near infrared, root near infrared, infrared and fluorescence. The system can measure plant structure, width, density, symmetry, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, leaf angle, leaf color, leaf spot, seed color, seed color area and other parameters through visible light imaging; Near infrared imaging can be used to analyze plant water distribution, hydraulics, stress physiology, etc; The water distribution in plant roots and soil columns was analyzed by near-infrared imaging of roots; Through infrared imaging, drought stress and transpiration of plants can be studied; The physiological state of plants can be analyzed through fluorescence imaging. Since all plants are labeled by barcode or radio frequency, all phenotypic data at different stages of their entire life cycle can be measured regularly. [13]
  • Zhaoxian Wheat Breeding Base
Zhaoxian Wheat Breeding Base of Institute of Genetic Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences is located in Zhaoxian Modern Agricultural Park, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province. It is a wheat molecular breeding base jointly built by the State Key Laboratory of Plant Cell and Chromosome of Institute of Genetic Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shijiazhuang Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences (Zhaoxian Experimental Station). It has 150 mu of experimental land and 23.4 mu of wheat transgenic base under the management of Zhaoxian Experimental Station. It can carry out many studies on high yield and quality of wheat, water-saving and drought tolerance, efficient use of nutrients, and comparison of wheat varieties. [14]
