The current laboratory director is Professor Jia Peifa of the Computer Department of Tsinghua University, and Professor Wang Jiaxuan, Ma Shaoping and Ronggang are the deputy directors of the laboratory. The laboratory academic committee is composed of 13 famous domestic experts, and the director is Academician of CAS Dai Ruwei, Professor Zhang Bo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Shi Qingyun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, are the deputy directors.

The laboratory consists of a central laboratory (intelligent technology and systems) and three sub laboratories (intelligent signal processing, intelligent graphics and image processing, human-computer interaction and media integration), which are respectively set up in the Department of Computer Science and Technology, the Department of Automation and the Department of Electronic Engineering of Tsinghua University. At present, the laboratory has 26 permanent staff, 1 academician, 17 full professors (including 9 doctoral supervisors) and 6 associate professors. Young and middle-aged researchers account for 56%.

The laboratory is mainly engaged in basic and applied basic research on the basic principles and methods of artificial intelligence, including intelligent information processing, machine learning, intelligent control, and Neural network theory He is also engaged in research on application technology and system integration technology related to artificial intelligence, mainly including intelligent robot, voice, graphics, image, text and language processing. These research directions are the forefront of similar international research, with the characteristics of interdisciplinary and technological integration, which are of great significance to the development of science and technology and economy.
Recent main research contents of the laboratory:
(1) Research on artificial intelligence theory. Formal methods of intelligent information acquisition; Theories and methods of massive information processing; Information development and utilization methods under the network environment; Machine learning.
(2) Advanced human-computer interaction technology and system. Sound, graphics, images, words and language processing; Virtual reality technology and system; Multimedia technology.
(3) Chinese language and word processing. Corpus linguistics and computational lexicology; MT Speech recognition and synthesis technology; Handwritten and printed Chinese character recognition technology.
(4) Intelligent robot technology and system. Sensor information processing and visualization; Intelligent control theory and technology; Space robot technology; Mobile robot technology and system.
(5) Intelligent signal processing. Personal identification technology and system based on biometrics; Geophysical signal processing and recognition.

Since its establishment, the laboratory has undertaken many national major basic and applied basic research projects and achieved a number of important research results. They either have a high theoretical level and potential application value, such as the problem solving theory and application of artificial intelligence, geophysical signal processing and recognition methods and applications, intelligent assembly robots, autonomous mobile robots and telepresence technology, or have important values in both academic research and engineering application, and have been popularized, Significant economic and social benefits have been achieved, such as real-time 3D graphic simulation of teleoperation system with large time delay, fingerprint automatic recognition system, multi font printed Chinese character recognition system, interactive self-learning offline handwritten Chinese character recognition system, linked multi character large character table specific Chinese speech recognition system and Chinese character table non specific Chinese speech recognition system THOCR97 integrated Chinese character recognition system, etc. In recent years, the laboratory has won 22 national and ministerial awards, including one second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award (THOCR-97 Integrated Chinese Character Recognition System), one third prize (ground military intelligent robot), and one fourth prize of National Natural Science Award (about ARMA model Identification and harmonic recovery), and three first prizes from ministries and commissions. More than 1000 academic papers and 22 academic monographs have been published in academic journals and international conferences at home and abroad. Some of their core papers have been cited dozens of times by SCI, EI, ISTP, SA and other search tools.
