The command module should be able to fly in vacuum, withstand the test of severe reentry, and float on the water like a ship.Although the parachute seems to reduce its speed to a lower level, its final splash down speed is still as high as 20 miles per hour.These tests, shown in Figure 2, determine the ability of the spacecraft to withstand the mechanical and thermal shock of splashing down and the subsequent ability to float on water.
