Ten comet clusters have been identified, and the number of comets in each cluster varies. One view is that comets in the same group are split from a large comet.

Comet cluster In addition to the different passing perihelion times, some comets whose other five orbital elements are very close are called "comet clusters". Some cases of comet splitting have indeed been observed. The most famous is“ Sun grazing comet Cluster ", at least 16 comets, whose perihelion distance is less than 0.01 astronomical unit, can pass through the corona, of which Comet Ikeya Yiguan (1965 VIII) split into three within two weeks after passing the perihelion on October 20, 1965. Shoemaker Levy 9, discovered by E. Shoemaker, C. Shoemaker and D. Levy in 1993, may have split several times when it approached Jupiter in July 1992. In 1993, five comet nuclei were observed first, then increased to 11, 17, and 21, which were arranged in a string on the photos and became "necklaces in the sky".
