Professor Yao arrived in Chongqing in early 1942 and worked in Nanyang Research Institute He continued to engage in the research work of Nanyang and made great achievements. In 1945, he was appointed as the former president of the National Oriental Language Institute. He was only 33 years old at that time. He was honored with the important task and was admired by scholars. As the president, he attached great importance to Southeast Asian studies, and soon established the Southeast Asia Research Office, which was chaired by Professor Zhang Liquan. It has trained many oriental language translation talents and experts on Southeast Asian issues. Professor Yao has been engaged in the study of Nanyang for 60 years. He has written many books and translated many works. He has written and translated about 30 books. Professor Yao died of illness on April 21, 1996 at the age of 84. He devoted his whole life to studying the history of overseas Chinese, thinking that Nanyang was a pioneer and founder of Southeast Asian studies in China, and also a great master of contemporary Southeast Asian studies.
