Historical evolution

The location of Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport used to be a marsh called "smelly water". At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Qing government built a racetrack here. After the Japanese occupied Dalian through the Russo Japanese War, in 1920, they hired Chinese workers to dig ditches, divert smelly water into the sea, and fill the depressions. At that time, the water flowed through Zhoujiatun, and the words "Zhou" and "Chou" were close, so "Chou Shui Zi" had become "Zhou Shui Zi" since 1921. [4]
In the 16th year of the Republic of China (1927), the original Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport was initially built, and it can be used to sail to Sinuiju, Pyongyang, Ulsan, and other places in North Korea. [4]

In the 26th year of the Republic of China (1937), the airport opened flights from Dalian to Shenyang, Tianjin, Peiping and other places. [4]
In the 34th year of the Republic of China (1945), Japan surrendered after defeat, and the airport was taken over and managed by the Soviet army. [4]
In May 1955, the Soviet army handed over the airport to the Chinese People's Liberation Army. [4]
On October 6, 1972, with the approval of the State Council and the Central Military Commission, the Civil Aviation Dalian Station was established in Zhoushuizi Airport of Dalian Air Force. [4]
On March 3, 1973, Dalian Civil Aviation Station was officially established. At that time, in Dalian Civil Aviation Station, the terminal was a two-story building and six bungalows borrowed from the air force station. The runway was 2040 meters long, and the apron, including the connecting lane, was only more than 8000 square meters, which could only accommodate the takeoff and landing of aircraft below An-24. The annual passenger throughput was 1961, the cargo throughput was 129 tons, and the number of employees was only 37. [4]
In April 1984, the first large-scale expansion of the airport was carried out, with a 3300 meter long and 45 meter wide runway, taxiway, taxiway and apron, ending the history of Dalian Airport that can only take off and land small and medium-sized aircraft. [4]
In 1985, the airport was approved by the State Council as an international airport open to the outside world. [6]
In 1992, 1999 and 2005, the airport was expanded and upgraded three times in a row. The area of the terminal has increased by 10 times, the area of the apron has increased by 30 times, and it is equipped with navigation facilities and equipment. The level of the airfield has reached the Class 1 standard of Class 4E. [4]
In January 1994, the airport was recognized by the Asia Pacific Civil Aviation Organization and approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and renamed as Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport. [6]
In February 2004, with the approval of the People's Government of Liaoning Province, the airport was decentralized to Dalian for localized management. [6]
In 2008, the airport opened Dalian Taipei, the first direct flight to Taiwan in Northeast China. [3]
In 2010, the airport became the first airport in Northeast China and the 16th airport in China with a passenger throughput of 10 million passengers, of which the international passenger throughput ranked the fourth in China. [2]
On September 6, 2011, the third phase of the airport terminal was completed and put into use, and the annual passenger throughput capacity of the airport increased to 16 million to 20 million person times. [2]
In 2012, the airport completed a new round of decoration and reconstruction, and the total area of the terminal reached 135000 square meters, covering a total area of 3450000 square meters. As the largest base airline in Dalian, China Southern Airlines has also obtained the exclusive terminal area after this decoration. [4]
On July 19, 2023, Dalian Airport will open the Dalian Haneda route, which is the only route to Tokyo in Northeast China. So far, Dalian Airport has become the first airport in Northeast China to open flights with Tokyo Narita and Haneda. [36]
