The location of Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport used to be a marsh called "smelly water".At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Qing government built a racetrack here.After the Japanese occupied Dalian through the Russo Japanese War, in 1920, they hired Chinese workers to dig ditches, divert smelly water into the sea, and fill the depressions.At that time, the water flowed through Zhoujiatun, and the words "Zhou" and "Chou" were close, so "Chou Shui Zi" had become "Zhou Shui Zi" since 1921.[4]
In the 16th year of the Republic of China (1927), the original Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport was initially built, and it can be used to sail to Sinuiju, Pyongyang, Ulsan, and other places in North Korea.[4]

On October 6, 1972, with the approval of the State Council and the Central Military Commission, the Civil Aviation Dalian Station was established in Zhoushuizi Airport of Dalian Air Force.[4]
On March 3, 1973, Dalian Civil Aviation Station was officially established.At that time, in Dalian Civil Aviation Station, the terminal was a two-story building and six bungalows borrowed from the air force station. The runway was 2040 meters long, and the apron, including the connecting lane, was only more than 8000 square meters, which could only accommodate the takeoff and landing of aircraft below An-24. The annual passenger throughput was 1961, the cargo throughput was 129 tons, and the number of employees was only 37.[4]
In April 1984, the first large-scale expansion of the airport was carried out, with a 3300 meter long and 45 meter wide runway, taxiway, taxiway and apron, ending the history of Dalian Airport that can only take off and land small and medium-sized aircraft.[4]
In 1985, the airport was approved by the State Council as an international airport open to the outside world.[6]

In 2010, the airport became the first airport in Northeast China and the 16th airport in China with a passenger throughput of 10 million passengers, of which the international passenger throughput ranked the fourth in China.[2]
