Kiel Airport is a civil military airport located 8.3 kilometers north of Kiel in northern Germany, providing aviation services for Kiel. The airport is jointly held by the state government of Schleswig Holstein and the municipal government of Kiel, of which the state government of Schleswig Holstein accounts for 55% and the municipal government of Kiel accounts for 45%. Kiel Airport was built in 1927. At the beginning of its establishment, the airport routes to 27 countries and international destinations. In 1937, the airport was designated as an air force base, but it was still used for civil flights. The altitude of the airport is 31 meters (101 feet), and there are two runways, namely, runway 08/26 with the length of 1260 meters × 30 meters and runway 08L/26R with the length of 450 meters × 35 meters. The first passenger terminal of the airport was built in 1965, and Pan Am Airlines operated scheduled flights. The terminal currently in use was built in 1987. In addition, the airport also has an air traffic control tower built in 1997 and a new hangar built in 2000.
