The purpose of the International Digital Earth Society is to promote international academic exchanges and project cooperation under the guidance of the concept of "Digital Earth", and promote the "Digital Earth" technology to play an important role in the sustainable development of national economy and society, environmental protection, disaster management, world heritage and natural resource protection, as well as anti-terrorism and maintaining world stability. From the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, New Zealand, Japan, Germany and other countries UNESCO Representatives of attended the founding conference of the International Digital Earth Society and the subsequent International Digital Earth Forum. The International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) is a non-governmental international academic organization initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and domestic and foreign institutions and scholars in the field of digital earth. The organization is registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and the secretariat of the Society is located in the Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Academician Lu Yongxiang, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is the founding chairman of the International Digital Earth Society. Development status of the society

(1) Organizational meeting
From November 29 to December 2, 1999, the first International Conference on Digital Earth, hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and co organized by 19 ministries and agencies, was held in Beijing. It was the first international conference on digital Earth in the world. Vice Premier Li Lanqing attended the meeting and delivered a speech. President Lu Yongxiang, as the chairman of the meeting, delivered a keynote speech on "cooperative development of the digital earth and sharing of global data resources". The meeting also invited 10 internationally renowned experts to deliver a specially invited report on the meeting. More than 500 representatives from 27 countries exchanged views and held heated discussions on the concept and understanding, theory and technology, and application prospects of digital earth. The conference adopted the Beijing Declaration on Digital Earth and the resolution to hold an international conference every two years.
In order to promote the development of digital earth, the International Steering Committee and Secretariat of the International Conference on Digital Earth were established in 2000, with President Lu Yongxiang as the chairman. Under the organization of the International Steering Committee of the Conference and the Executive Committee of the Society, the International Digital Earth Conference successfully held the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth International Digital Earth Conferences in Canada, the Czech Republic, Japan, the United States and China in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009, respectively. In 2006, the "Digital Earth Sustainable Development Summit" was held in New Zealand. Prime Minister Clark of New Zealand attended the meeting and delivered a speech. The second and third Digital Earth Summit were held in Potsdam, Germany, and Nesebar, Bulgaria, in 2008 and 2010 respectively. The holding of a series of conferences attracted hundreds of representatives from dozens of countries.
The themes of previous international digital earth conferences range from "Towards a digital earth", "Beyond information infrastructure", "Information resources for global sustainable development", "Global shared digital earth", "Experience digital earth", "Digital earth and sustainable development" and "Digital earth and global change" to "Digital earth in action", Scientifically delineated the macro track of the digital earth from its start to its development. The convening of the series of conferences provided a platform for exchanges in the field of digital earth, promoted the development of digital earth disciplines, and promoted international exchanges and cooperation.
(2) Publication of journals
The International Journal of Digital Earth (IJDE) is an academic publication of the International Digital Earth Society, which was published by the famous British publisher Taylor&Francis Publishing Group. It was officially launched in March 2008 and officially included as a SCI (extended edition) journal in August 2009.
International Journal of Digital Earth is the first professional journal in the field of international digital earth. The editorial board is composed of 30 experts and scholars from 17 countries.
(3) International cooperation and exchange
The Society has constantly strengthened communication and liaison with international organizations, research institutions, experts and scholars, and established a wide range of cooperative partnerships. Especially in November 2009 Earth Observation Organization At the sixth plenary meeting of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), the International Digital Earth Society was admitted as a full member of the Earth Observation Organization, which paved a broader international stage for promoting cooperation and exchanges between the international organizations of the Society. On June 1, 2024, the Third China Digital Earth Conference held the "20th Anniversary of the International Society for Digital Earth" in Suzhou. In order to commend the outstanding scientific and technological workers who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the global digital earth, the International Society for Digital Earth awarded Academician Guo Huadong the "Outstanding Scientific and Technological Achievement Award for Digital Earth" and Liu Yongwei, Secretary General of the National Committee of the International Society for Digital Earth, the "Outstanding Contribution Award for China's Digital Earth".
