In 2001, it was jointly proposed by the then National Tourism Administration, the National Planning Commission and the State Environmental Protection Administration, and jointly formulated the recognition criteria. It was an honorary title jointly evaluated by relevant procedures.
In July 2007, the National Tourism Administration and the State Environmental Protection Administration jointly awarded the Eastern Overseas Chinese Town the honorary title of "National Ecotourism Demonstration Area", and the Eastern Overseas Chinese Town became the first tourist area in China to win this honor. In the same year, the Management Specifications for the East Overseas Chinese Town National Ecotourism Demonstration Zone was issued.
In November 2008, the National Ecotourism Development Working Conference was held in Beijing. At that time, the National Tourism Administration was formulating the National Ecotourism Demonstration Area Standard and issued a draft for comments at the conference.
In 2010, the National Tourism Administration proposed, in conjunction with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and two institutions, to draft the Code for Construction and Operation of National Ecotourism Demonstration Zones (GB/T26362-2010).
In September 2012, the National Tourism Administration and the Ministry of Environmental Protection jointly formulated the Regulations on the Management of National Ecotourism Demonstration Areas and the Implementation Rules for the Scoring of the National Ecotourism Demonstration Area Construction and Operation Specifications (GB/T26362-2010), and promulgated them for implementation.
In December 2013, the National Tourism Administration and the Ministry of Environmental Protection announced the list of national ecotourism demonstration areas in 2013 [1] , 39 in total.

2. Forest type
The ecotourism area mainly constructed by forest vegetation and its habitat also includes large areas of bamboo forests (bamboo sea) and other areas. Such areas are suitable for scientific research, camping, vacation, hot spring, recuperation, science popularization, hiking and other activities.
3. Steppe type

4. Wetland type

5. Marine type

The ecotourism area mainly constructed by desert or Gobi or its creatures and their habitats is suitable for sightseeing, exploration, scientific research and other activities.
7. Humanistic ecotype

The application procedure mainly includes six stages: application, evaluation, acceptance, announcement, approval and review.
1. Declaration:
The application units that meet the basic conditions specified in Article 9 of the Regulations on the Administration of National Ecotourism Demonstration Zones shall apply to the institutions determined by the provincial tourism and environmental protection authorities and submit the application documents.
Within 60 working days from the date of receiving the application documents, the institutions accepting the application shall jointly carry out the preliminary assessment and screening work in accordance with the Specifications and the Detailed Rules for the Implementation of Scoring, and recommend the qualified applicants to the relevant national assessment institutions through the provincial tourism and environmental protection authorities.
2. Technical evaluation:
The relevant national assessment institutions shall complete the material review within 30 working days from the date of receiving the application documents (including the preliminary assessment comments). For units that are qualified in the application documents, the on-site technical evaluation shall be completed within 60 working days; If the application documents are unqualified, they shall be resubmitted after being supplemented and improved.
The relevant national assessment institutions shall, within 30 working days after the completion of the technical assessment, feed back the written assessment opinions to the provincial tourism and environmental protection authorities and the application units; If any problem is found, it shall be rectified in time.
3. Assessment and acceptance:
After the technical assessment is qualified, or the problems found in the technical assessment have been rectified as required and verified by the organization determined by the provincial tourism and environmental protection authority, the applicant can apply for on-site examination and acceptance to the relevant national assessment authority through the provincial tourism and environmental protection authority.
After receiving the application for assessment and acceptance, relevant national assessment institutions shall organize relevant management personnel and experts to carry out assessment and acceptance within 60 working days.
4. Public announcement:
The declaration units that meet the standards and pass the examination and acceptance shall be publicized on relevant websites for at least 7 working days. For complaints and reports received during the publicity period, the relevant national assessment institutions shall conduct on-site verification, or entrust the provincial tourism and environmental protection authorities to conduct verification and make corresponding decisions.
5. Approval and licensing:
The units that have not received complaints and reports during the publicity period, or whose complaints and reports have been investigated, verified and improved, will be awarded the title of "National Ecotourism Demonstration Zone", and certificates and signs will be issued.
6. Review management:
Implement a review management mechanism of "dynamic management, advance and retreat" for the demonstration area.
The awarded demonstration area shall submit the work summary of this year and the work plan of the next year to the national and provincial tourism and environmental protection authorities for filing before the end of November each year. The work summary should focus on analyzing the specific practices of the demonstration area in the aspects of ecotourism development, planning and construction, operation management, environmental protection, etc.
A review shall be organized every three years for the designated demonstration area. The review work shall be organized and implemented by the relevant national assessment institutions in a unified manner, with the cooperation of the tourism and environmental protection departments of all provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government).
