Zunjing Academy
In 1874, Zhang Zhidong personally planned to build the Sutra Academy near Shixi Temple at the south gate of Chengdu (today's Wenmiaoqian Street, Qingyang District, Chengdu), and in 1875, the Spring School House was completed and opened.At that time, in order to guide students in their study, Zhang Zhidong specially wrote two books, namely, "Yixuan Yu" and "Bibliography Answers".[81]
Sichuan Provincial Higher School
In 1902, the Chinese Western School merged with the Sichuan Tongsheng University with the Zunjing Academy founded by Wu Tang, governor of Sichuan Province, and Zhang Zhidong, Sichuan Xuezheng in the 13th year of Tongzhi (1874).At the end of 1902, it was renamed as Sichuan Provincial City Higher School.In 1903, the Jinjiang Academy, founded by Liu Defang, the Sichuan Provincial Procurator, on the basis of Wenweng Stone House in the 43rd year of Kangxi (1704), was incorporated.After 1911, it was renamed Sichuan University, and in 1916, it was merged with Sichuan Normal University to establish the National Chengdu Normal University.Sichuan Provincial City Higher School is one of the earliest schools in China to hire foreign teachers abroad. It is also authorized to take charge of the affairs of foreign students in Sichuan Province.[79]
Five special schools
During 1906-1910, five special schools were held in Sichuan, including Sichuan Law and Politics School, Sichuan Tibetan Language School, Sichuan Tongsheng Agricultural School, Sichuan Industrial School, and Sichuan Cungu School.By 1927, these schools had evolved into the School of Law and Politics, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Agricultural Sciences, the School of Engineering, and the School of Chinese Literature of the public Sichuan University, and finally became a part of the National Sichuan University.[82]

National Chengdu Normal University
Educator, 1912Cai YuanpeiHe served as the Chief Education Officer of the Provisional Government, and issued a series of education laws, such as the University Order, the University Education Regulations, and so on, known as the "Renzi School System" in history.Revolution of 1911Later, Sichuan Provincial City Higher School was renamed as Sichuan Official Higher School, and Sichuan Tongsheng Normal School was renamed as Sichuan Superior Normal School and Sichuan Higher Normal School.[84]
In 1916, Sichuan official colleges and universities transferred teachers and students as well as all funds, school assets, books and equipment to Sichuan Normal University, and renamed it National Chengdu Normal University.The National Chengdu Normal University, established in 1916, together with Beijing Normal University (today's Beijing Normal University), Nanjing Normal University (today's Nanjing University), Wuchang Normal University (today's Wuhan University), Guangdong Normal University (today's Sun Yat sen University), and Shenyang Normal University (today's Northeast University), is known as the six top teachers in China.[84]
In 1927, the Normal Department of the National Chengdu Normal University was reorganized to form the National Chengdu Normal University, which is still located in the original site of the Imperial City National Chengdu Normal University.It was a comprehensive normal university in the southwest at that time, and was the main base for the supply of teachers for secondary normal schools and ordinary middle schools in western China.[86]
National Chengdu University
After the school system reform in 1922, Chengdu Normal University was divided into two schools in 1926.Some of the original Sichuan colleges and universities were moved back to the South Campus and rebuilt as the National Chengdu University, while the normal part was rebuilt as the National Chengdu Normal University.National Chengdu University started to set up three branches of literature, science and law. In 1930, the branch was changed into a college. In addition, the newly established law department had 11 departments, with undergraduate and junior college students (arts and sports). In 1927, the enrollment of preparatory students was suspended.In 1931, it was merged with National Chengdu University, National Chengdu Normal University and Public Sichuan University to form National Sichuan University.[85]
In 1927, Sichuan Public School of Traditional Chinese Studies, Sichuan Public School of Foreign Languages, and Sichuan Public Agricultural School Sichuan Public Industrial School proposed to be changed into a single discipline university. In August of the same year, they merged to form a public Sichuan University, forming a tripartite confrontation with the National Chengdu University and the National Chengdu Normal University.[87]
National Sichuan University
On November 9, 1931, National Chengdu University, National Chengdu Normal University and Public Sichuan University were merged into National Sichuan University, which was one of the 13 national universities in China at that time.The "Three Rivers Convergence" is an important milestone in the historical development of Sichuan University, marking the further start of the nationalization and modernization of Sichuan University.After the former five specialized schools were merged to form the public Sichuan University, they were renamed as the School of Chinese Studies, School of Foreign Languages, School of Law and Politics, School of Engineering and School of Agricultural Sciences of the public Sichuan University, with 19 departments.[87-88]

Eight yearsCounter-Japanese WarIn China, many famous professors and scholars gathered in Sichuan and were hired to teach in the university.The National Sichuan University in the rear area continued to develop in a relatively stable environment and was known as one of the "top ten national universities" at that time.[88]
In 1949, the National Sichuan University had six colleges, namely, literature, science, law, engineering, agriculture and normal education, including Chinese, history, English, law, politics, economics, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, aviation engineering, civil and hydraulic engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, agriculture, horticulture, plant diseases and pests, sericulture, agricultural economy, agricultural chemistry, forestThere are 25 departments and 2 specialized departments, including animal husbandry, veterinary medicine and education, with 1038 teaching staff, including 167 full-time professors, 53 associate professors and 79 lecturers.[88]
At the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the National Sichuan University was renamed as Sichuan University. At that time, it had six colleges: arts, science, law, engineering, agriculture and normal education, with a total of dozens of disciplines.In the adjustment of departments in the 1950s, Sichuan University changed from a comprehensive university to a comprehensive university of arts and sciences, directly under the Ministry of Education.In 1960, Sichuan University became one of the first batch of national key universities and was one of the 13 national key liberal arts and science comprehensive universities at that time.During the "Cultural Revolution" from 1967 to 1976, the school stopped recruiting students.In 1978, Sichuan University resumed enrollment.[89]

In 1944, Sichuan University put forward the plan and application of "adding practical subjects", which was approved by the Ministry of Education. After that, the Department of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering and the Department of Aviation Engineering were added to the College of Science.In March 1945, the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was added, and it was decided to set up a college of science and engineering.In the summer of 1947, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the College of Science and Technology of Sichuan University was divided into the College of Science and the College of Engineering.In 1948, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the Department of Chemical Engineering was added, and the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was divided into the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering.[90]
In 1952, the institutions of arts, science, law and teachers of Sichuan University were abolished, and the institutions of engineering and agriculture were retained.According to the local adjustment plan for engineering colleges of colleges and universities in southwest China approved by the central government, the Department of Civil Engineering and Water Conservancy of Engineering College of Sichuan University is divided into the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Water Conservancy;The Department of Water Resources and the Department of Chemical Engineering of North Sichuan University were transferred to the Department of Water Resources and the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Institute of Technology of Sichuan University;The water conservancy team of the Water Resources Department and the Civil Engineering Department of Southwest Polytechnic College was assigned to the Department of Water Conservancy of Sichuan University Institute of Technology;The Department of Chemical Engineering of Sichuan University Institute of Technology was adjusted to the newly established Sichuan Institute of Chemical Engineering;The aviation department of Sichuan University Institute of Technology was transferred to Beijing Institute of Aeronautics.[90]

In 1952, South Sichuan Polytechnic College and South Sichuan People's Office set up a college with the nature of chemical industry, named Sichuan Institute of Chemical Industry.The headquarters of the hospital is located in the original South Sichuan Administrative Office in the city, and the first grade and preparatory classes are located in the original South Sichuan Engineering College in Wayaoba outside the city.In August 1953, the Chemical Department of Xichang Technical College was transferred.[92]
Chengdu Institute of Technology
In July 1953, the Ministry of Higher Education held a national administrative meeting of higher industrial schools, and decided to merge Sichuan University Institute of Technology and Sichuan Institute of Chemical Technology in the summer of 1954 to establish Sichuan Institute of Technology.On August 27, 1954, the newly established Chengdu Institute of Technology of Sichuan University held its founding ceremony, and Xu Qizhi, the president of Chengdu Institute of Technology, announced the official establishment of Chengdu Institute of Technology.When Chengdu Institute of Technology was founded, in addition to the five undergraduate majors of the four departments of machinery, electrical engineering, civil engineering and water conservancy before independence, two specializations of water energy utilization and hydraulic structure were set up in the specialty of river structure and hydropower station hydraulic architecture, and there was also a specialized subject of water conservancy technology and architecture, with a total of 1273 students.[91]
In 1955, Chengdu Institute of Technology was merged with Sichuan Institute of Chemical Technology, and the name of the school was still 'Chengdu Institute of Technology'.In September 1978, with the approval of the State Council, Chengdu Institute of Technology was changed into Chengdu University of Science and Technology, which was listed as a national key university, led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Sichuan Province, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences as the main leader.In the same year, the school participated in the national key universities for the first time to enroll new students. A total of 1098 undergraduate students were enrolled in 18 majors and 7 teacher classes.[91]

The school focuses on the planning and construction, the implementation of teaching plans, and the logistics of teaching and research.The management system of West China Union University, in accordance with the principle of Union, is modeled on the system of Oxford University, and consists of the board of directors, the council, the president's executive board (cabinet).When West China Union University was founded, the churches participating in the joint education built and managed a group of school buildings respectively, and shared a certain amount of administrative funds for the university.[83]

In 1914, the medical department was added, the religious department was added the next year, and in 1917, the dental department was added again. In combination with the above-mentioned arts, science, and education departments, there were six departments in total, becoming a comprehensive university focusing on medicine and dentistry, with equal emphasis on arts and science.In 1927, the school applied to Sichuan Provincial Department of Education for filing, and in 1933, it was officially approved by the Ministry of Education for filing.During this period, Huada University carried out a major reorganization, changed its name to "Private West China Union University", abolished the religion department, and merged the other departments into three colleges of arts, science and medicine.By 1949, the school had four colleges of literature, science, medicine and dentistry.In 1951, the university was renamed West China University.[83]

The predecessor of West China Medical University was the "Private West China Union University" jointly founded by the Christian churches of Britain, the United States and Canada in 1910. It is a comprehensive university with four colleges of arts, science, medicine and dentistry.After the founding of New China, the government of the People's Republic of China officially took over the university and named it "West China University".After the adjustment of national colleges and departments in 1952, the university changed from a comprehensive university to a new multi professional medical college - Sichuan Medical College.The school has medical science, stomatology, hygiene, pharmacy and other majors.[93]

In October 1985, with the approval of the Ministry of Health, Sichuan Medical College was renamed "West China Medical University".There are 8 schools in the school, including the School of Basic Medicine, the First Clinical School of Medicine, the School of Stomatology, the School of Public Health, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Adult Education, the School of Forensic Medicine, and the School of Nursing, 2 departments of Foreign Languages, the Department of Maternal and Child Health, and the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department of Sports, the Library, the Archives, the audio-visual education center, the computer application and research center, and the experimental animal center,1 pharmaceutical factory.[93]
Sichuan Union University
On March 16, 1994,National Education CommissionThe People's Government of Sichuan Province has officially decided to merge Sichuan University and Chengdu University of Science and Technology into Sichuan Union University, which will be jointly built by the State Education Commission, Sichuan Province and Chengdu City, setting a precedent for the strong merger of Chinese universities.[65]
On April 18-19, 1996, the school successfully passed the preliminary examination of the "211 Project" department organized by the State Education Commission and entered the key construction of the "211 Project".[94]
New Sichuan University
In December 1998, Sichuan Union University restored its name as "Sichuan University".Li Lanqing pointed out that "Sichuan University is the earliest university in China's higher education reform, which has made a historic contribution to the reform of colleges and universities, and can be said to be a pioneer in the reform of college system."[94]
In September 2000, Sichuan University merged with West China Medical University to form a new Sichuan University.The disciplines of Sichuan Union University cover the main fields of literature, science, engineering, economics, management, law and other disciplines.[94]In 2002,Jiang'an Campus of Sichuan UniversityThe construction was officially started, and the first batch of freshmen moved in in the autumn of 2003.[95]The Graduate School was officially established on May 24, 2004.[2]

North school gate
The north campus gate of Sichuan University, popularly known as "Red Gate", has a Chinese style "Pin" shaped structure. Four square red columns stand tall, supporting three eaves on the left, middle and right. Under the columns, eight footstones with the same shape of auspicious clouds are used to fix the whole building. The blue eaves above are decorated with colored paintings. The eaves are high and carved beams and painted buildings.In the center of the building, there are four large gold characters - Sichuan University. The name of the school is the name of Sichuan University inscribed by Comrade Deng Xiaoping in 1985.[137]

Jiangjie Memorial Hall
Jiangjie Memorial is located on the right side of the east gate of Wangjiang Campus of Sichuan University. It is the first Jiangjie Memorial Hall in China and the first martyr themed memorial hall in southwest universities. It was designed by Duan Yunong, professor of the School of Arts of Sichuan University.The name of the memorial hall was inscribed by Mr. Ma Zhitu, a calligrapher.Jiang, formerly known as Jiang Zhujun, studied in the Agricultural College of National Sichuan University from 1944 to 1946, and is a typical representative of the Communist Party members who gave their precious lives for the birth of New China.In December 2020, the Memorial Hall was awarded "Sichuan Patriotic Education Base" by the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and the People's Government of Sichuan Province.[138-139]

West China Bell Tower
The West China Bell Tower, also known as the Bell Tower, formerly known as the Corris Chronicle Tower, is located in the West China Campus and is a provincial cultural relics protection unit.The building was built in 1925 and donated by a surgeon named Chris in New York, USA. It is one of the landmark buildings in Chengdu.The clock tower is a two-story masonry tower building, 24 meters high, square in plan, 9 meters long and wide, and covers an area of 81 square meters.The ground floor is of single eave Xieshan style, the second floor is of Sifang Cuanjian roof, and the upper part is embedded with a western style giant clock. The ground floor is built with blue bricks into a north-south arch channel, and the building body is made of blue stone, blue tiles, and red walls.[140-141]

Mingde Building
Mingde Building was basically completed in 1954, marking the beginning of large-scale infrastructure construction of Chengdu Institute of Technology at that time.It was originally the first teaching building of Chengdu Institute of Technology, and was later converted into the administrative building of Sichuan University. In early 2013, it was officially named "Mingde Building", meaning "the way of university, in Mingde".Mingde Building of Sichuan University is one of the most symbolic buildings in Sichuan with the combination of Chinese and Western cultures. It has a strong traditional renaissance architectural color. It is a national key cultural relics protection unit, known as the masterpiece of Chinese university buildings, and has been included in important monographs by the architectural history community[147]。
