By May 2024, the school has three campuses, Longtan, Shuangji and Fengman, with a total area of 1.15 million square meters;There are 13 teaching colleges (departments) with 52 undergraduate majors;There are 4 first level disciplines authorized by master's degree and 6 specialties authorized by professional master's degree;16000 students[1][28]

In 1954, Jilin Technical School of Northeast Chemical Industry Bureau was renamed as Jilin Technical School of Chemical Industry Bureau of the Ministry of Heavy Industry of the Central Government. Later, Jilin Technical School of Chemical Industry Bureau of the Ministry of Heavy Industry of the Central Government was renamed as Jilin Technical School of Construction Company of Jilin Chemical Industry Park.
In 1955, Jilin Cadre School of the Construction Bureau of the Ministry of Chemical Industry was founded, and the Technical School of Jilin Chemical Industry Park Construction Company was renamed as Jilin Chemical Machinery Technical School.
In 1957, Jilin Chemical Industry Company Amateur Chemical College (Jilin Amateur Chemical School) was founded, and Jilin Chemical Machinery Technical School was renamed Jilin Mechanical and Electrical Workers Technical School.
In 1958, Jilin Mechanical and Electrical Workers Technical School, Jilin Cadre School of the Ministry of Chemical Industry Construction Bureau, and Jilin Chemical Industry Company Amateur Chemical College (Jilin Amateur Chemical School) merged to form Jilin Chemical College.
In 1959, the technical secondary school of Jihua Calcium Carbide Factory was incorporated into Jilin Institute of Chemical Technology.
In 1965, Jilin Institute of Chemical Technology and Jilin Chemical Industry Company's Chemical Technical School merged to form Jilin Chemical Machinery School.
In 1969, Jilin Chemical Machinery School was renamed as Jilin Chemical Machinery Plant Chemical Machinery School of Jilin Chemical Machinery Plant.
In 1972, the Chemical Machinery School of Jilin Chemical Machinery Plant was renamed as the Chemical School of Jilin Chemical Industry Company.
In 1978, the Chemical School of Jilin Chemical Industry Company was upgraded to Jilin Institute of Chemical Technology.
In 2008, the university was rated as "Excellent" by the Ministry of Education for undergraduate teaching.
In 2009, the university was approved as the construction unit with the right to grant master's degree.
In December 2011, the Ministry of Education approved the school as the second batch of excellent engineer education and training colleges.
In 2013, Jilin Aviation Engineering School was integrated into Jilin Institute of Chemical Technology as a whole, and the Shuangji Campus of Jilin Institute of Chemical Technology was set up. On the basis of the original aircraft and engine maintenance, numerical control technology, mold design and manufacturing, machining technology, electronic technology application, electromechanical technology application and other majors, the aviation engineering vocational technology college was established by integrating the original related majors and teachers.[3]
In October 2019, the university was successfully selected as a model university for transformation and development in Jilin Province.[4]
In March 2020, the university was approved as a Class A characteristic high-level university construction project (application type) in Jilin Province.[5]
