Shadow copies, also known as snapshots, are stored in Data Protection Manager (DPM) The server Point in time copy of the replica on. Copy is File server Protected share folder And a full point in time copy of the file.
To start data protection, you must first copy a full copy of the selected data to DPM Server's Storage pool Medium. After that, the replica will be synchronized periodically with changes to the protected data. DPM is scheduled to Protection group Each copy in creates a shadow copy. If data loss or corruption occurs, you can access the shadow copy to restore the previous version of the file. You can recover data or enable end-user recovery so that end-users can recover their own data independently.
If the DPM server has enough storage space, DPM can store up to 64 shadow copies per protection group. If the storage area limit is reached and a new shadow copy is created, the oldest shadow copy is automatically deleted and cannot be restored. When selecting the shadow copy time, DPM provides you with the recovery range and maximum data loss estimate. These estimates will help you specify a shadow copy schedule that provides adequate data protection and meets your recovery objectives. You can schedule up to eight shadow copies per day.
Shadow copy backups ensure that:
The application continues to write data to the volume during the backup process.
Open files are no longer missed during backup.
Backup can be performed at any time without blocking users.
Some applications manage storage consistency differently when files are opened, which may affect the consistency of files in the backup. For critical applications, refer to the application documentation or consult the provider for information on Backup mode Recommendations. If in doubt, close the application before performing the backup.

Enable Volume Shadow Copy Service
Shadow Copy can only be used for Disk partition Or volumes, not specific folders. The service supports documents, tables, graphic images, and Database file Replica creation, but does not support the pre upgrade version of the application and the creation of E-mail data replicas. To introduce the method, take enabling the "Volume Shadow Copy" service in the Windows Server 2003 system as an example:
Step 1: Right click in the "My Computer" window Shared Folders Select the "Properties" command for the NTFS partition (such as zone H). Open on“ Local Disk (H) Properties dialog box, switch to the Shadow Copy tab, and then click the Enable button.
Step 2: Open the "Enable Shadow Copy" dialog box and prompt the user that enabling shadow copies may have a negative impact on the server's read and write performance. Confirm that this operation will not affect the normal operation of the server, and click Yes. Wait a moment for the "Volume Shadow Copy" service to be enabled, and then the instantly created copies will be listed in the "Volume Shadow Copy of Selected Volume" list box. [1]
