Nanqiao River in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, formerly called Nanxi River, runs acrossChikan DistrictIt is the largest natural river and the largest flood discharge channel in the urban area.[2]
Nanqiao River used to be located in the south of the old urban area of Chikan District, Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, and now runs through the center of Chikan City.Nanxi, known as Nanxi because of its narrow river surface and small water volume, originates from Mazhang Guhe Village and flows into the sea area from Tiaoshu Island to Shawan via Diaoshu, Datang, Baishuipo, Chenwu Port and Dongyuan Village, with a total length of 14.5km.There are two tributaries: one originates from Changbu Village, Mazhang District and flows into Nanxi via Yacao, Shuigou, Yuntou and Hongwuxia Village;The other one flows into Nanxi through the pit in Beilinggou, Mazhang District.In September 1958, the People's Government built Chikan Reservoir at the junction of two tributaries. Nanxi was widened to 32 meters, and the "Xichi Bridge" originally located in Nanxi was transformed into a south bridge, from which Nanxi was renamed as Nanqiao River.

According to historical records, the South Bridge is located at the junction of Shengchuan Avenue North and Zhongshan 1st Road, Chikan District, Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province.Formerly known as "Xichi Bridge", it was built in 1910 during the French colonial period. At that time, it was the only bridge from Chikan to Xiying (Xianxia Mountain);

Nanqiao Park is one of the parks proposed to be built in the Special Plan for Landscaping 1997-2010 of Zhanjiang City. The park covers an area of 127.5 mu. Construction began in December 2002, and the civil works have been basically completed.Nanqiao Park is the first new park built in Zhanjiang in the past 17 years, and the first riverside park in Chikan District for 800 years.
