The predecessor of the school was the cadre training class of the General Administration of Posts and Telecommunications during the war, which was founded in the Shandong Anti Japanese Base in 1942. After going through the stages of "War Posts" school, Shandong University Posts and Telecommunications Department, East China Posts and Telecommunications School, etc., the school was approved by the State Council to be transformed into a undergraduate college in 1958, named Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and renamed Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications in April 2005.The university was originally a key university directly under the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and the Ministry of Information Industry. Since 2000, it has been jointly built by the central and local governments (now the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Post Office and Jiangsu Province), with Jiangsu Province as the main management.In 2013, the former Nanjing Institute of Population Management was officially incorporated into Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications.In 2018, it will be jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Jiangsu Province“"Double First-Class" initiative”Build colleges and universities.[3-4]

In 1942, the "Wartime Postal Administration Cadre Training Class" was founded in Binhai, ShandongAnti Japanese Democratic Base AreaDongganlin Village.
In July 1945, the training class was expanded to "War Post" School, and later, it was once called the Posts and Telecommunications Department of Shandong University and Shandong Post College.The campus has been successively located in Lunan, Linyi, Wulian and other places.
From 1942 to 1947, Zhao Zhigang, the director of the General Administration of War and Posts, served as the head of the training class and the subsequent headmaster of the school.(After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Zhao Zhigang served as the deputy minister of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications for a long time in charge of post and telecommunications education.).
In 1948, the schoolYidu(Qingzhou) was named East China School of Posts and Telecommunications, which was subordinate to the East China General Administration of Posts and Telecommunications at that time.
In August 1949, the school moved from Jinan, Shandong to Nanjing.
During the eight years from 1942 to 1949 before the founding of the People's Republic of China, the school trained a group of urgently needed backbone talents in posts and telecommunications for the revolutionary war.
In December 1950, the school was expanded to become the Nanjing Post and Telecommunications School directly under the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, which also ran secondary professional and higher educationspecialtyBen.

In February 2022, it was selected into the second round of "double first-class" universities.[22]
On March 21, 2023, the School of Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering (School of Integration of Industry and Education) of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications was established.[36]
In April 2024, the School of Social Work of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications was officially established.[51]
