On July 31, 1959, the Notice on Strengthening Meteorological Work issued by the State Council pointed out that the meteorological system urgently needed a large number of intermediate and senior technicians with both systematic theoretical knowledge and strong practical ability. On December 8, 1959, the Central Meteorological Administration submitted a report to the State Council on the establishment of the School of Meteorology of Nanjing University. The report describes the number of junior college graduates of in-service technical cadres in the national meteorological system, the demand for medium and senior professional and technical personnel for the future development of meteorological cause, the training of meteorological professionals in existing universities, and the discussion and communication process with the Ministry of Education, Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee, Nanjing University and other units for the preparation of meteorological colleges and universities.
On January 12, 1960, the Ministry of Education officially replied to the Central Meteorological Bureau that "it is agreed to establish the School of Meteorology of Nanjing University on the basis of the Department of Meteorology of Nanjing University, and Nanjing University will retain a Department of Meteorology after the independence of the College in the future" [3] On January 14, 1960, the Central Meteorological Administration forwarded the document of the Ministry of Education approving the establishment of the School of Meteorology of Nanjing University, and the Jiangsu Provincial People's Committee also issued a notice on the establishment of the Preparatory Committee for the School of Meteorology of Nanjing University. In 2016, the school trained 121 new teachers throughout the year, 79 of whom were qualified as lecturers. The university stipulates that professors and associate professors should undertake undergraduate teaching work. In principle, they should teach at least one course for undergraduate students every academic year. In particular, well-known professors are encouraged to serve as the teaching work of undergraduate freshmen's professional introduction courses. In the 2016-2017 academic year, 70.18% of the total number of professors (excluding lectures) taught undergraduate courses, and 19.78% of the total number of courses taught by professors.
