Commercial geography works in the 19th and early 20th centuries generally first analyzed the geographical factors, cultural landscape and transportation conditions of commodity production and distribution, and then classified the distribution characteristics of commodities. On this basis, they carried out a subregional description, and analyzed the quantity and composition of commodities, foreign trade relations, commercial activity centers and trade routes. These contents are essentially basic knowledge of regional economic geography. At present, the main research contents of regional commercial geography include: ① the geographical basis of regional commodity development. Study the regional natural conditions and resource composition, socio-economic conditions, economic geographical location and transportation conditions, and determine the development direction of regional commodity production through the analysis of regional internal structure, interregional links and interregional comparative benefits; ② Regional economic structure centered on commodity production. Study the regional characteristics of the overall economic activity process of production, circulation and sales, especially organize the regional productivity distribution with commodity production as the center according to market demand; ③ Market system. Study the supply and demand of commodities among regions, the relationship between regional differences in commodity production and marketing and commodity circulation, and the analysis and prediction of the market scope, market capacity, and market demand structure of regional commodities, and use this as feedback information to adjust regional production; ④ The spatial system of regional commercial activities. Study the hierarchy of regional commercial networks, the commercial functions of cities, the use of urban commercial land, the location and rise and decline of trade centers and ports and their connections with hinterland, and the construction of rural market town network.
