Hokkaido is the first level administrative region of Japan. It is located at the northernmost end of the Japanese archipelago, opposite Honshu Island across the Tsugaru Strait in the south. It covers 83456 square kilometers, including Hokkaido Island and nearby islands (Rishiri, Liwen, Othiri, etc.). The population is 5.508 million (2010). The original ethnic group is the Ainu, and many local place names come from the Ainu language. Coal mining is important, and manganese, lead and zinc are also mined. The output of marine fishery, logging, dairy cattle, horse raising, sugar beet and potato ranks first in China. The industry is dominated by food processing, paper making, wood processing, oil refining and steel. The water and land transportation is convenient. There is a Qinghan train ferry between the state and the Qinghan undersea tunnel. Sapporo, the capital city, in addition to Xuchuan City, Hakodate City, Kushiro City, etc. See "Hokkaido" (page 170).
