The Beitongpu Railway was started in November 1933 and completed in 1939. It was a narrow gauge railway when it was initially built. In 1938, it was changed to standard gauge and connected to the national railway network. Beitongpu Railway has been developed earlier, with magnificent mountains and rivers, rich resources, simple folk customs and many historic sites.
It was originally the meter gauge railway built by Yan Xishan, a warlord in Shanxi Province, who organized Shanxi Suiyuan military industry to build it on his own strength. In 1938, the Japanese army changed Beitongpu into a standard track. After liberation, Nantongpu was also changed to standard track. Beitongpu Railway has been developed earlier, with magnificent mountains and rivers, rich resources, simple folk customs and many historic sites.
April 24, 1949 Taiyuan Liberation Datong was liberated on May 1, Taiyuan Railway Administration was established on June 7, and Shanxi Railway Repair Headquarters was established on November 6. Taiyuan Railway Administration Bureau has set up Beitongpu Engineering Brigade to take charge of railway rush repair. From November, the first unit of the Railway Corps began to rush to repair the 118km line from the Queen's Garden to Xin County (80km) and from Xin County to Shijiagang (38km, now Xinhe Branch).
From March to June in 1950, the first unit of the Railway Corps was responsible for repairing the line and bridge from Pingwang to Shuo County. The Xin County Shuo County section was repaired and opened to traffic from August 1950 to July 1951 by the engineering team of Taiyuan Railway Administration Bureau, the bridge team of Hengyang Railway Administration Bureau and the Shuo County Engineering Office of Tianjin Railway Administration Bureau due to its large slope, many curves, serious bridge damage and great difficulty in emergency repair. So far, Pingwang Xinxian section has been repaired and opened to traffic. The opening ceremony of the whole Beitongpu Railway was held on August 2, 1951, when Teng Daiyuan, then Minister of Railways, cut the ribbon in person.
On January 25, 1957, the technical transformation project of Beitongpu Railway began. Taiyuan Railway Administration has abandoned 90% of the old line between Jialing of Ningwu Xuangang section and built a new line. Xinzhu Duanjialing Tunnel was 3345m long, second only to Sichuan Guizhou Railway Liangfengya Tunnel, the second longest tunnel in China, was completed on October 30, 1959.
In the late 1980s, Beitong Pujiang Railway was electrified on a large scale. Some lines were further straightened, the curve radius was increased, station lines were added, and heavy rails were replaced. The line carrying capacity was further improved, and the driving equipment was more modern. It was started in June 1983 and opened on July 31, 1989. On April 1, 1992, Beitongpu Railway completely abolished steam locomotive traction, and changed from Internal combustion engine Electric locomotive Traction has become one of the main trunk lines for the outward transportation of Shanxi coal.
