In order to carry out academic exchanges and cooperative research at home and abroad in the field of molecular biology and obtain high-level achievements and talents, the National Planning Commission and the Chinese Academy of Sciences organized an expert group in 1984 to demonstrate and decided to establish a national key laboratory of molecular biology in the Institute of Biochemistry. After preparation, the laboratory passed the acceptance in 1986 and was officially opened to the public in 1987. This is the first key laboratory set up by the state in the field of life science research. Over the past 20 years, the laboratory has gone through six sessions, with Zhang Youshang, Ao Shizhou, Lin Qiwho, Jin Youxin and Li Lin as the laboratory directors of each session; Zhang Youshang, Lin Qihe, Ao Shizhou, Liao Kan, Wang Nduo and Shi Yunyu served as the directors of the academic committees of each session. At present, it has entered the seventh session. The laboratory director is researcher Zhou Jinqiu, and the academic committee director is academician Xu Guoliang. [1]

The National Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology is positioned as an innovative basic research laboratory, aiming to become the international forefront in the field of molecular biology, solve major scientific problems in the field of molecular biology, reveal the essence and laws of life phenomena, and provide theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of major diseases. The laboratory takes "gene function and its regulation" as the research core, uses molecular biology, biochemistry and structural biology research methods, and combines research systems in cell biology and other related fields to deploy three research directions: (1) gene expression and epigenetic regulation; (2) RNA metabolism, function and regulation; (3) Signal transduction network protein function and regulation.
