The reconstruction and expansion project of Hubei section of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway is 342.2 kilometers long, with a total investment of 64.1 billion yuan.It is divided into four sections. Among them, 76% of the sections and investment in the reconstruction and expansion project of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway in northern Hubei are in Xiaogan.[12]The project is expected to be completed in 2025.
The northern Hubei section of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway passes through Dawu County, Xiaochang County and Xiaonan District in Xiaogan City, connects Jiuliguan, Luoshan County, Xinyang City, Henan Province in the north, and ends at Fuhe Bridge at the junction of Xiaonan District and East West Lake in the south. The total length is 121 kilometers, the total investment is 15.8 billion yuan, and the construction period is 42 months.[12]
The main line of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway Reconstruction and Expansion Project (Xiaogan Section) will be reconstructed and expanded with the scheme of "widening on both sides, widening and building locally". The original 4 lanes will be expanded to 8 lanes, with a design speed of 120 km/h.[12]
On March 9, 2022, the trenching and setting out of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway Reconstruction and Expansion Project (Caidian Section) was officially launched in Longwang Village (the end of Caidian Section), Caidian Economic Development Zone (Zhashan Street).[13]On October 1, at the construction site of Fuhe Bridge, the first precast pile of Bid 5 of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway Reconstruction and Extension Project was successfully inserted and driven, and the project officially entered the construction phase of the main works, opening the curtain on the construction of the whole line.[18]

Hunan Section
The Hunan section of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway has experienced two major events: the reconstruction of Tanlei section and the construction of double track (also known as the second phase reconstruction of Tanlei section).
The reconstruction of Tanlei section is to repair the damage caused by excessive traffic flow on the pavement and the damage to structures such as bridges and culverts. The project was completed on October 17, 2012.
The double track reconstruction project is adopted because the Hunan and Guangdong sections of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway pass through many high mountains, and the cost of widening the original foundation is huge. Therefore, priority should be given to the expansion of the road network, and the double track of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway should be opened to traffic in 2016.
On June 8, 2022, the G4 Beijing Hong Kong Expressway Zhuzhou Section pavement medium repair project will start[14]。On the morning of July 27, the mobilization meeting was held for the commencement of the Leiyi Expansion Project of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway, the Jinli Expansion Project of Shanghai Kunming Expressway and the Yuanshui Hongchen Channel Project in Hunan Province. This means that Leiyi Section of G4 Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway, which has been "in service" for nearly 20 years, has officially started the "4-to-8" lane change project. This is also the first "4 to 8" expressway reconstruction and expansion project in Hunan Province, which is expected to be completed and opened to traffic in 2025[15]。After the project is completed and opened to traffic, it is of great significance to ease the traffic pressure of Hengyang section of G4 Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway, which will greatly shorten the time for Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway to travel to the direction of Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, greatly improve the external traffic conditions of Hengyang, and drive economic and social development[11]。

Guangdong Section
The Guangdong section of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway starts from the border between Hunan and Guangdong in the north and ends at Guangzhou in the south. This line greatly facilitates the communication between Guangdong and the mainland.

G4 Beijing Section
G4 Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway Yanglousi (boundary between Hunan and Hubei) → Yueyang Longwan Section (total length of the line is about 71 km), Yueyang Longwan → Changsha Guangfu Section (total length of the line is about 79 km), Zhuzhou Wangshiwan (Zhuting) → Leiyang Dashi Section (total length of the line is about 96 km), these three sections are G4 Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway expansion projects.
G4 Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway is the expressway with the largest passenger flow in Hunan. The traffic volume of Hunan section can reach 70000 vehicles per day on average, and more than 100000 vehicles in some sections during peak hours. The four lane expressway can no longer meet the needs of the masses.[30]
On April 12, 2023, the Changsha Transport Work Conference was held to deploy the key transport work in 2023. In 2023, Changsha will start the construction of Beijing Hong Kong Macao Expressway.[27]
