2. Weinan Pucheng to Xi'an-Eyi-Laoyu Section
The reconstruction and expansion project of Pucheng Laoyu Highway of Beijing Kunming National Expressway is a provincial and municipal key highway construction project. The Beijing Kunming Reconstruction and Expansion Project starts from the interchange of Dongyang Terminal at the intersection of Beijing Kunming Expressway and Yulin Lanzhou Expressway. The reconstruction and expansion is mainly carried out along the existing road in the south with widening on both sides. It passes Pucheng, Fuping, Yanliang, Gaoling, Lintong, and Gangwu District to Xiewang Interchange, and uses the existing Xi'an Ring Expressway to reach the interchange of Hechizhai Terminal, and then southwards Xi'an High tech Zone Fengdong New Town and Yuyi District end at Laoyu Interchange of Beijing Kunming Expressway, with a total length of 164.386 kilometers, including 125.878 kilometers of reconstructed and expanded sections. The bridge in the port affairs area is an important part of the reconstruction and expansion project of Pucheng Laoyu Highway on the Beijing Kunming line of the national expressway. The total length of the bridge is 773 meters, and the design width of a single bridge is 20.5 meters. The bridge superstructure span is arranged with prestressed concrete precast box girder and prestressed concrete cast-in-place continuous beam, with the maximum span of 40.2m.
3. Xi'an Section
(1) Xiyan Expressway
Xi'an Yanliang Expressway (referred to as "Xi'an Yanliang Expressway" for short) is an important part of the main skeleton of the "meter" shaped highway, and is a major channel connecting Xi'an to Yanliang. The Xi'an Yanliang Highway Project was originally a Class I highway, but later it was changed to "Xi'an Aircraft Class I Highway" because Yanliang was an aircraft city. It is a supporting project of Shaanxi Provincial Government's cooperation project to introduce 100 passenger aircraft from France to Xi'an Aircraft Manufacturing Company located in Yanliang. In July 1996, the Planning Commission of Shaanxi Province approved the proposal for Xiyan first-class highway project. In November 1996, Shaanxi Provincial Planning Commission approved the feasibility study report of Xiyan first-class highway project. The total length of the route is 29.5 kilometers, starting at K26 of Xi'an Tongchuan Highway and ending at Tanjiapu, Yanliang District. The subgrade is 24.5m wide, with a total investment of 472 million yuan. The preliminary design document was completed in 1997 and approved by Shaanxi Provincial Planning Commission, and the construction drawing design was completed in March 1998. The provincial government requires to ensure that the project will be completed and opened to traffic in 1998, "starting construction first, handling special affairs specially, and collecting after construction".
In April 1998, the state adjusted the G40 corridor direction in Shaanxi in the "1990~2020 National Trunk Line Planning Plan". Xiyan Highway, as a section of National Highway G40, enters the national trunk line network. All the sections that were originally started were suspended. However, when receiving the notice of suspension, K46~K55+529 (section F) had been fully started, and the lower works of the railway viaduct and Qingshuihe Bridge had been completed, and some structures and subgrade earthwork had been completed. After redesigning and public bidding, the adjusted line was commenced in December 1999 and opened to traffic on September 29, 2001.
Xi'an-Yan'an Expressway starts from the new overpass of Xi'an Ring Expressway (north section), passes Baqiao District, Gaoling County, Sanyuan County, Lintong District, Yanliang District, ends at Tanjiabao in Yanliang District, passes through three districts, two counties, ten villages and towns, crosses Weihe River, Qingshuihe River and Houxi Railway, with a total length of 39.241 kilometers. It is a four lane up and down split driving, fully overpass, fully closed, and fully controlled access, The construction standard is plain hilly expressway. The driving speed is 120km/h, the subgrade width is 28m, the carriageway width is 2 × 7.5m, the median width is 3m, the minimum radius of horizontal curve is 2000m, and the maximum longitudinal slope is 2.3%. The design load of bridge and culvert: Grade 20, Hang-120, clear width of bridge deck 2 × 12m, design flood frequency of bridge 1/100, super large bridge 1/300, seismic intensity 8, and the pavement structure type is asphalt concrete. The estimated budget is 893 million yuan. The Ministry of Transport subsidized 226 million yuan, and the rest was self raised by Shaanxi Province. The actual construction investment is 82.164 million yuan. Main quantities completed: 2 small bridges, 2 super large bridges 1803m long, 2 major bridges 239m long, 25 medium bridges 1833m long, 65 channels, 146 culverts, 2 interchanges, 10 separated interchanges, 3 toll booths and 1 toll station.
On May 13, 2002, Shaanxi Provincial Department of Transport organized handover and acceptance, and formally handed over to Shaanxi Expressway Group Beiqin Branch for maintenance from May 15, 2002. After the handover and acceptance, the project construction management unit will continue to improve the drainage system of the whole line, complete the acceptance of environmental protection facilities, and go through the land acquisition procedures. From December 17 to 18, 2004, Shaanxi Provincial Department of Transport organized the completion acceptance of the highway, and the project quality was rated as excellent. [54]
(2) Xihu Expressway
Xi'an Xiyi District Expressway ("Xihu Expressway" for short) is a part of the main trunk line of National Highway G5 in Shaanxi and an important section of the "meter" shaped main skeleton of Shaanxi highway. The project feasibility study report was completed in May 2000, approved by the Ministry of Transport on June 29, reviewed by the Shaanxi Provincial Planning Commission at the end of June, and approved by the Ministry of Transport on September 30.
The plan starts from Hechizhai in the south section of Xi'an Ring Expressway, passes through Zhucun, Yijing, Xiliu, Lingnuma in Chang'an District and 11 towns and townships in Niudong, Wuzhu, Ganting, Wuchan, Tianqiao and other two counties in Yiyi District in the southwest direction, crosses three major rivers, including Fenghe River, Laohe River, Tanyu River and many small rivers, and ends at Laoyu, the end point. It connects with the round the mountain road in Xi'an, with a total length of 31.75 kilometers, There are two interchanges in Huxian County (now Yidong Hub) and Laoyu. The subgrade is 28m wide, two-way four lane, and the design speed is 120km/h. It was started in March 2001 and opened to traffic on November 20, 2002. The final account for completion was 728 million yuan. Main quantities of Xihu Expressway: 1 super large bridge of 566.08m, 2 major bridges of 511.18m, 22 separated interchanges of 1015.03m, 72 culverts, 57 passages, 8 overpasses, and two interchanges. 259183 trees were planted. In terms of building construction, 2 toll stations, 1 management office and 1 maintenance area will be built. On September 28, 2003, the municipal transportation bureau was entrusted by Shaanxi Provincial Department of Transportation to organize handover and acceptance, and the project quality was evaluated as excellent. From September 2004 to September 7, 2006, the Municipal Transportation Bureau successively organized the handover and acceptance of Xihu high-speed electromechanical, housing construction, greening, and Huxian County connecting line projects. The electromechanical and housing construction projects were rated as qualified, and the connecting line and greening projects were rated as excellent.
On January 30, 2007, Xi'an Transportation Bureau and Provincial Expressway Group held a handover ceremony for Xihu Expressway. According to the unified arrangement of the Provincial Department of Transport, the right of operation and management of Xihu Expressway will be transferred from Xi'an Municipal Transport Bureau to the Provincial Expressway Group from now on. On September 28, 2023, the reconstruction and expansion project of Pucheng Laoyu section of G5 Beijing Kunming Expressway will be completed and opened to traffic. [45]

The project is sponsored by Shudao Group Chuangao Company and China Railway No.5 Engineering Group Co., Ltd as well as Sichuan Communications Investment Construction Engineering Co., Ltd The consortium is invested and constructed, with a construction period of 4 years, and is planned to be completed and open to traffic in 2026. The project construction is of great significance in improving the traffic capacity and service level of the existing Beijing Kunming Expressway, improving the national expressway network and enhancing the traffic guarantee capacity.
The project has the characteristics of "one difficulty, two heights and three more". First, the terrain is complex and the conditions for construction mobilization are difficult; Second, the technical standards of mountain expressways are high, and the proportion of bridges and tunnels is as high as 85%; Third, there are many environmentally sensitive areas along the line, with many karst development and many mined out areas. Hongyanzi Tunnel is located in Lizhou District, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province, at the northern edge of Sichuan Province, in the transition zone from mountains to basins. It is a two-way six lane tunnel with left and right separate lanes. The left line of the tunnel is 2855m long, the right line is 2859m long, and the maximum burial depth is 274m. [20]
3. Guangyuan Mianyang Section
The project starts from Zhoujiahe in Guangyuan City and connects with G75 already built Lanzhou Haikou Expressway The Guangyuan Nanchong section, passing through Hongyan Town, Zhaohua District, Guangyuan Port, Gaoguan Township, Pu'an Town, Liugou Town, Wulian Town, Yanwu Township, Xuzhou Town, Zitong County, Mianyang City, Xujia Town, Youxian District, ends at the southeast of Weicheng Town, and connects with the Mianyang Chengdu section expansion project of the G5 Beijing Kunming Expressway under construction.
The total length of the project route is about 124km, of which the bridge is about 42km long and the tunnel is about 34km long. The whole line adopts the standard construction of two-way six lane expressway, with a design speed of 120km/h and a subgrade width of 34.5m. Highway Class I is adopted for the design of vehicle load of bridges and culverts. The tunnel construction clearance is 15.25 × 5.0m. Asphalt concrete pavement is adopted for the whole line.
There are 12 interchanges along the line, including Zhoujiahe (hub), Hongyan, Jianmenguan, Pu'an, Liugou, Wulian, Yanwu, Xuzhou, Liangtancheng, Wolong, Weicheng and Weicheng (hub). 10 interchange connecting lines will be constructed at the same time, totaling about 18 kilometers. Grade II highway standard is adopted for interchange connecting line, with design speed of 60km/h and subgrade width of 10m.
Necessary traffic engineering and facilities along the line shall be constructed simultaneously along the whole line. Other technical indicators shall comply with the specified values in the Technical Standards for Highway Engineering (JTGB01-2014). [36]
Lot LJ11 of Guangyuan Mianyang Section Expansion Project of G5 Beijing Kunming Expressway is located in Zitong County, with a total length of 13.592km and a total construction period of about 30 months. The main works include 10 bridges (5.126km in total), 1 tunnel (725m), 5 overpasses and 29 culverts. Tongjiahe Bridge is 1398 meters long and planned to be completed in July 2023. It is one of the key and difficult projects in this section, highlighting the characteristics of "four big and three high", namely, large pile diameter of pile foundation (2.5 m), large area of cushion cap (1312.2 m3), large span of continuous steel structure (180 m), difficult construction, high pier height (43.5 m), high quality and safety requirements, and high environmental and water conservation requirements, Tongjiang River Bridge in this contract section is a control project that needs to be constructed in advance to ensure the simultaneous completion and opening to traffic with the whole line.
The commencement of the construction of Tongjiang River Bridge is a specific practice of the traffic first strategy. After completion, it will further strengthen the Xuzhou Interchange of S209 Provincial Highway (Zizhong Road), which will help improve the traffic conditions in the surrounding areas, build a more smooth traffic network, promote sound and rapid development in the surrounding areas, and enhance the comprehensive economic strength. Shitaibei Section of Beijing Kunming Expressway is 65 kilometers long, with a two-way six lane design. It is another important expressway connecting Shijiazhuang and Taiyuan. It connects Pingding Yangqu Section of Beijing Kunming Expressway westward Shanxi Central Shaanxi North Ningxia The most convenient way for the transportation of goods and materials from the north to the port is conducive to realizing the transportation hub strategy of "connecting the east with the west" in Hebei Province. Its completion will greatly relieve the pressure of the current Beijing Kunming and Qingdao Yinchuan expressways sharing the same line between Shijiazhuang and Taiyuan.
